I need a new email address as the 2 I have are not so much full of spam but just ones that I don’t care to use as much. I have one Yahoo account and one Hotmail account. Mainly I just use these for email addresses where one has to be provided (guitar center, pro audio star, ect.)
Looking for free email that doesn’t have to do a lot, but just works right. More for personal & a few business related contacts. I was considering gmail, but saw that they just changed some things recently that many people didn’t like as far as the layout goes.
Which one(s) do you use? Do you like them? Also important is that is has to be able to be forwarded or “pushed” to my phone. Thanks for your recommendations. I’d post a poll between AOL, GMAIL, YAHOO, and OTHER, but I don’t know how.
If you really can’t stand the UI changes to the gmail web app (which after a bit of playing around aren’t that awful), it’s pretty easy to set up your gmail account in a full email client installed on your computer with POP/IMAP.
I’ve been on gmail since the invite period in 04/5, did that setup and honestly I’ve been using the web app most of the time for about 2 years now.
For more security you can now enable 2-step authentication, nice to have.
Push isn’t a problem usually - what kind of phone are we talking about?
You’re familiar with Yahoo and hotmail already, won’t comment on those - if only that hotmail’s webmail has improved, but I feel it’s still lagging behind gmail’s, specifically when it comes to managing folders and sub folders (or rather, “labels” in gmail, which are more like tags… so you can tag a message to appear in several folders…).
Haha, you guys are great. So just a wild guess that y’all like gmail huh? I was beginning to wonder where everyone went, but I guess many people had extended holidays.
I guess besides the new UI, my concern with Gmail would be them wanting too much personal information from me (such as your phone number just to sign up). Anyone encounter this or think too much of it? I’m a bit paranoid about the big brother effect I guess.
bumtsch - with gmail being used as a full email client were you referring to a program like Apple’s mail app? I use an iphone so I know gmail would push to that ok. Do you find their “labels” awkward at all compared to folders?
Labels are a little different to get used to, but now that I have I like them. The filters you can set up are pretty powerful and of course searching through nearly eight years of email is scary easy.
Yeah, I did mean setting it up in like Mail, or Thunderbird or whatever you fancy.
This. Although mapping gmail’s folders to IMAP folders can be a little messy and offline syncing required too much fiddling around to limit mail file sizes on my pc, I ended up hardly using this.
I can see your point wrt. privacy, but I’m afraid I can’t help you much there - I did create a third account last spring, don’t remember having to enter my digits there but I can’t be sure that I didn’t, and have no idea whether it’s required now.
In the end it doesn’t matter anymore because I gave them the number when setting up the the two-factor authentication scheme so I can ask to receive an access token via sms.
