hmmm…this will be really interesting
in other news: chrome OS is released today! woop woop!
where else in history would a govt extradite someone on a rape charge with little evidence.. it doesn’t happen. this kind of thing makes me sick.
do it
Yeah, don’t piss off the USA or we’ll show the world how evil we really are.
I agree that the rape charge seems incredibly doctored and I’m putting some serious ???'s as to the validity of it.
However leaking 250k of US gov’t cables…you knew someone’s head was going to roll for that one, and Assange put himself front and center.
I respect his opinions and believe in a free press, but there is also a certain expectation of secrecy under which elements of government must be able to operate. This isn’t me being a conservative nutjob, but a pure political realist. If I was a foreign correspondent reporting to my government I would expect a modicum of privacy concerning communcations with my superiors, just as when I talk to my friends I expect a certain level of privacy.
fuck this scumbag!
It wasn’t rape it was ‘sex crimes’ for not wearing a dinger in a threesome..
The guy seems like an absolute dweeb, more likely a case of character assassination imo. To add to this, I saw a documentary on him when he started wikileaks and the guy’s an absolute wanker. Pretty much every time he spoke on camera (to the doc crew) it was about how he was getting so much attention and causing so much uproar.
Probably not ideal this info was released and looks more of him having the opportunity to release something that will get him a shit load of attention with a vail of sincerity towards a cause I’m not sure exists.. Pretty ridiculous to expect a government to be transparent in security matters..
I don’t think him being a dweeb is grounds for allowing him to be shunned by his country’s government, and extradited on charges that have absolutely no evidence. Put him on a stand for the real issue, not this political stunt.
so to the opposition: you think the world is worse place because of what he did?
put his personality aside, it’s not HIM that is important. it’s what he DID (indirectly) and what he SUPPORTS.
I said this inferring that the charges weren’t genuine.. because of his slight chances of copping a threeway haha. According to my link though the evidence is a statement from the women.
I agree it’s just any reason to lock him up, obviously. Imagine if the US (or any country) just threw him in a cell for releasing those docs. I doubt it will stick anyway. Will be very interesting to see if he accidentally dies soon though, surely too public by now… surely.
Worse - maybe
Less safe for service members - Yes
Don’t get caught up in political beliefs, freedom of press, etc. In the end he is jeoporizing peoples lives.
You have to scrutinize him as a person - WHY and HOW he’s doing things must be taken into consideration. He’s a sleeze bag publishing leaks to support his agenda. Washington Post, NYT, etc. all published many of the Afghan leaks and still had the integrity to keep peoples lives safe by eliminating or redacting sensitive info
You can support your cause and make a statement the correct way. Now the Govt plays hardball with him and they are the ones viewed as being wrong. Thats comical.
The guy’s a shitbag.
Whether or not the charges are at all legit, is anyone really that surprised?
It was only a time before he got locked up or killed. JFK, anyone?
Exposing sources in Iraq (Iraqi civilians, that is) and the many other things. This fucker is just reckless thinking that he is doing something good all the while encouraging antipathy towards the US–as if we didn’t need anymore. And at a time our AG looks like a buffoon?! Sure as hell he’s gonna get plucked.
Wikileaks shines a light on facts that would otherwise be buried. People who think this information SHOULD be buried are sheep who have already bought into the government line. It doesn’t matter if Assange is a fame whore, dweeb, or indeed a rapist. The fact is that the things revealed by Wikileaks so far reveal what our governments are really up to, how they relate to each other, and most importantly - what they’re capable of when they think no one is watching. When someone shines a spotlight on a tiny fraction of their activity, you can see how severe the reaction is.
Anyone interested in keeping the spotlight on should look for the file “insurance.aes256” and download a local copy. This is the Wikileaks “poison pill”, and is an archive of new documents. Currently the file is encrypted and unreadable. The more people have the file, the more likely that it will be disseminated without government interruption if WL releases the key.
Meh, Government all have their secrets. YOU have your secrets. This is not some kind of buying the government line sheeple issue. A simple stroll through current events and watching CSPAN could reveal quite a bit. Sometimes gvts have to obscure facts in the interest of other countries it has always been that way and it always will. it’s fucking politics not some sophomoric, cause-head “freeing information”. The only thing interesting in all this guy’s releases is the fact Hillary Clinton asked ambassadors to spy–which is par for the course for her.
EDIT:
Sheep?
People who think this is important information for public consumption and don’t appreciate the nuance in international relations need to get out of the fucking coffee house and think of the potential harm of exposing intelligence sources.
That’s not even that interesting, what do you think ambassadors in other countries do? One of their primary tasks outside of acting as a point of contact for a country within another country is to gather information. Also, the cables go back much further than that and the USA has been playing the game this way way before before Hillary was made Secretary of State.
I also believe that the other countries play the game in more or less the same way, believing anything else is altruistic and bordering on naive stupidity.
And?
Still the most interesting ![]()
Perhaps interesting to you ![]()
I didn’t think it was that interesting because it didn’t surprise me in the slightest. I’m actually surprised they weren’t gathering even more information.
WHO’S LIVES DID HE JEOPARDIZE? please, tell me.
i’ve looked at many, many of these cables and have not seen ONE name. there were weeks leading up to the first major leak that were spent sifting through all of these cables and redacting information that might compromise the safety of those involved.
