 Apparently a once-famous helmeted Parisian duo did the OS to this Disney extravaganza. I’ve seen the movie and listened to the soundtrack, and yes, amongst John William’s ‘sweeping orchestral soundscapes’ (please stop me if you’ve heard THAT one before) there is the odd little bleep. Certainly no extremely profound lyrics - like ‘Around the world’ (at least I THINK that’s what they ‘sing’). It’s not punk, it’s daft and it’s very tedious.
What am I missing here?
Seriously, why in the hell did everyone expect this to be the next Daft Punk album? It’s the score to a movie… it’s supposed to be something that exists largely in the background. If you’re taking immediate notice of a movie’s score too often then the composer has failed.
I get you Pix (GREAT avatar) but it IS a DP album, albeit an OS. Why bother then - why not stick with Williams. Has DP sold out to mainstream Disney? It WAS hyped as the next DP. I hear you on what makes a good score, but I was waiting for some (real) DP. Maybe it’s my expectations being off mark, rather than DP.
Try this: listen to some John Williams scores, then listen to the Tron score. Basically, get yourself “in the mood”, as it were, for some movie background music, and then try the Tron score again…
…actually, scratch that. Wait until you have an assignment due for class, if you’re in college, or some sort of “work” you need to be doing, and then listen to the Tron score. Scores were made to function in the background, and I find that they make for much more compelling listening experiences when they stay in the background. I listen to scores whenever I’m doing homework, which is a lot, and the Tron score has been making the rounds a lot lately.
Was the score hyped as the next Daft Punk album? It sounds like some shit Disney would do. But that doesn’t mean that Daft Punk failed at their task, which was to produce appropriate background music for a movie. You’re not supposed to notice it, it’s supposed to provide subtle emotional landscaping. If your expectations were built up inappropriately, then maybe it wasn’t you or Daft Punk that failed, but rather the money grubbing Hollywood hype machine that will say anything to sell their product.
Sweet Jesus, I just typed a lot without saying anything, didn’t I? I should have gone to sleep hours ago. Long story short: give the score a listen as background music and see if that changes your opinion on its execution.
Sound advice - wildo. I suppose, like most OS’s, it lacks something out of context or as a retrospective. Then again, you can listen to Morricone’s OS to ‘The Mission’ and almost relive the movie. As you say - the Disney hype machine can influence.
As I recall it, it wasn’t hyped as the new Daft Punk album but as the soundtrack made by Daft Punk. And as such, it worked out quite well in my opinion.
I loved the movie, thought it was soooo much better then the orginal, and i luv the orginal. It just seemed like they were finally able to bring the idea to full realization. Forgive im a nerd I know.
However i didnt think the soundtrack was all that. and infact i was confussed from day one as to wy a super hi tech film like tron was using music from a house duo. I mean Im a house head, thats what i spin, thats what i produce and thats what i luv. but i just never though DP was fitting for the tron universe. I still think (im gonna get shit for this) that Deadmau5, paul van dyke, maybe max graham would have been a better choice, Shot come to think of it, Crystal method would have been wayyy efiin cooler then DP.
Justy my 2 cents.
But I loved that movie its was everything i was hoping for.
I thought the movie was nicely done. To those who complained that wide shots of the digital world didn’t have Aerodynamic playing over them, all I can say is that there were moments in that film that were made seriously epic by some well placed bass by the brass headed boys.
Anyone else fucking LOVE that fight scene in the club? Everyone panics and fucks off except for DP who look at each other and use it as an opportunity to play some seriously nice music.
yeah Daft is perfect for a movie like tron, they fit the bill perfectly. i personally throught it was gonna be a new album like discovery, but the tracks that did mack the OS werent that bad – derezzed, badlands ect.
rumor has it from a few months ago that daft released the tracks disney rejected from teh soundtrack as a side project called “the third twin” – (very sketchy detials about this being them – biggest one for me was the tour schedule on their myspace page – for any daft fan youd recognize it)
and i know DJTT isnt the place for torrents and free music becuase it takes away from the artist distributing it for free, but here is the whole album that was released by them. http://www.downloadtorrents.org/torrent.php?name=The+Third+Twin+Homemade&id=2264401 but im pretty sure daft relased this because they are still in a contract with disney over their name and cant release their own material till tron is outta the theatres. (BTW, i fucking LOVE this album, daft or not)
i cant wait for them to tour again. whrever they are i am going to be. regardless of price or distance.
oh yeah. tron when it was supposed to be made (visually atleast). plus it basically was the “the dude goes to the grid” lol. i loved it.
