Haha I try to at least skim over each album to make sure the quality is ok and nothing is corrupt or anything. Doing a lot of weddings I need to be able to fill any request.
play some Poolside too. i think the whole nu disco and deephouse thing would work well. i would keep some top 40 songs (BOOOO!) handy, just in case. i would sprinkle those in every now and then. I dj a community event before and thats exactly what i did. the crowd loved the “cool techno music” (nudisco/french house) and also like the top 40 stuff.

Straight up. Everyone has a different idea of what a “pool party” should be. What if these people like Hip Hop?
There’s tons of pool parties at hotels on South Beach and the range of what is played is vastly different. I played a prime time tourist spot on Ocean Drive and “deep house” is a no-go there. Your idea of a pool party might not be theirs. Ask them.
Just ignore the ‘Pool’ part of the title - it’s a party like any other so if you have your 84,000 songs I’m sure they’ll like some of them 
If you do weddings you should be fine with this party. I would be ready with Top40 Pop, Dance, Hip Hop & R&B. Also throw in some classic rock and old school (80s & 90s) Hip Hop and R&B. People do want to hear the new songs but love it when you drop an old school classic that takes them back. The mainstream house music may work as well. I DJ regularly at a bowling alley and I never know what I will be playing from night to night so I play all of the above to see what everyone is dancing too.
in all honesty, a neighborhood pool party in atlanta SCREAMS top 40. If this event isn’t top 40, I couldn’t think of what would be

I would def play start off by playing some Tech House. try to find some songs that have been mashed up with the Top 40 songs, but that keep the Tech House vibe. It keeps a great vibe and get’s people moving.
Later on in the night while everyone has had several drinks and much looser, you can get a way with some Progressive and Electro tracks.
you can try it, but it always depends on the people. read the crowd.
I always start off and gauge with tech house. let’s me know if they need a little more, or a little less energy.
I would play a variety of music and see what gels with the crowd. Make sure to mix plenty of top40 in there. It’s top40 for a reason. 
Worst thing to do is assume that people are going to like Deep House, balaeric etc no matter how great you (we) thinkg it is.
Popular music is called popular music for a reason, because you could consistently walk into a room of strangers, and popular music will consistently fare better than the former (Deep House, Balaeric, etc).
Don’t be unprepared. In my experience, top 40’s/popular music fans can be the worst because they have the highest expectations (that every dj should ever song in the history of recorded music).
Am I the only one who would like to hear the Beach Boys or Jimmy Buffet at a pool party?

I feel for the OP.
When I decided to go from DJ’ing progressive house in the clubs, to mobile DJ’ing, I got yelled at a lot by event guests for years for not having what they wanted.
For me i guess the pool is a very different ambiance, but it’s mostly the people that are going to the party that matters, you could have a house pool party, or even have a Hip Hop on, a top 40 one..
All that matters is the crowd.. I think i’d investigate to find what type of crowd is it..
So far, the only clues we have are from the OP…
There was also a general statement about “…we don’t know what kind of music, that’s why we’re hiring you…”
I’d bet on a bunch of 40 & 50 somethings and their pre-teen kids. The high school & college kids might show up…but who wants to hang out with their parents at a pool party…? So, the kids will be the ones without a drivers license.
This is the big clue. They prob mostly listen to whats on the radio, and they like music but they don’t follow to deeply into any genre. My bet is popular music all the way…no that doesn’t mean girly wussy songs (hate it when some dj’s think switching it up from some weird ass edm songs nobody likes to popular music means dropping California girls and call me maybe and other ish like that)
