Thanks for all the advice! I’v definitely got the gig, the venue has been informed etc. Not gonna lie, I’m nervous, but that’s normal… On the plus side I’m meeting up with the DJ who booked me in the first place sometime this week and he’s going to give me some tracks that I will definitely need, and ones that go down well there (he plays there often) It’s going to be a mixed group, with kids in til’ fairly late, so Il have to watch it a bit with the explicit lyrics etc. I’v done a bit of digging on the pub, it looks like they like quite old stuff, I think Il be playing a lot of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s music. The one thing I’m most worried about is using the mic, I don’t really know when it’s appropriate and what to say, the landlady will want to speak too ofcourse. For that I’m planning on creating a small loop of the incoming track and playing it very quitly under the mic, that way there’s always musical content and I can just bring it up and stop the loop when need be.But yeah. I’m bricking it about using the mic. I’v also got to manage a new PA system which should be fun (we’re hiring one.) It’s all very exciting, and very nervewracking, thanks again for all the advice though and sorry I’v taken so long to reply! I’v been practicing my mixing, and my chopping (have a feeling Il be doing a lot of that) and I’m starting to get a consistent hang of it which is a big step in the right direction, consistency is key. However I’m going to need to pace myself as it will probably be a 6 ish hour set. Meeting up with the DJ who booked me will be great, he’s also transporting me there and back, and he’s said that if the gig goes well there will probably be future work too! Not much I can do other than practice now and try to get some hands on crowd experience beforehand. Everyone has to do a first gig, I just never thought my first ever gig would be after 4 months of mixing, on new years eve, in a pub. What do I do around midnight? Like when do I start the final countdown etc? Do I speak? Other than welcome to 2016 etc and dropping an absolute banger ofcourse
CHeers!
Good luck matey ![]()

if you’re music is right, you don’t need the mic.
Less is more on the microphone.
The host might want you to announce “Everyone grab yourselves some champagne it’s almost midnight.” around 10 minutes before the countdown.
Don’t freak out about the atomic clock syncing to midnight. Feel the vibe and you will notice people getting anxious and looking at their cellphones.
When you feel it’s close enough (people love suspense) just turn the music to zero for about 4 seconds to get everyones attention and then start it up loud and with purpose on the mic. “10, 9, 8, 7, .”
And don’t say anything after you get to “1”. The crowd will be so loud cheering that it will clash.
Auld Lang Syne is good to throw in for arouund 40 seconds before you drop your banger.
People will be toasting, cheering hugging and kissing. So a straight banger will throw off the vibe.
Let the crowd breathe in 2016, before bangin the dancefloor.
Thanks for that man, very helpful stuff!
It went well! especially considering it was my first gig. There were a few issues that experience will enable me to iron out, but overall it went great, the guests had a great time and the staff said that it was a great night with a great atmosphere. Happy days.
Thanks for all your help guys!
Nice work young padawan
