Powered USB hubs for connecting an audio interface to an RPi

Yo. So my aunt just handed me a Raspberry Pi, naturally the first thing that came into my head was “I gotta get xwax running on this”.

This means I need to connect a big power hungry USB audio interface to it- and my interface doesn’t have a port to connect a power supply to. I figure the only solution is a powered USB hub, something I know nothing about. Can anyone offer me some tips or recommend me a powered USB hub that would be suitable for use with an audio interface?

Cheers guys!
Louis

Cmd-mm1 :stuck_out_tongue:

Bit wasteful and I’m not planning to wait that long for it :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah I know, was kidding a lil. BTW it seems they already start to sheep them.

Saw this one get mentioned a lot in the last thread on hubs:

The MM-1 does have the advantage of being multi-TT though.

See this is something I need to know- what exactly does multi-TT mean and what impact does this have?

I think the main advantage is that any USB 1.0/1.1 devices will usually bottleneck a typical single-TT hub, whereas the multi-TT hub does not get bottlenecked.

Not an issue for USB2.0/3.0 then?

Should be fine if every device connected is 2.0 or newer.

So will any old powered hub probably be ok then?

Any hub should work, but as with anything it’s best to buy something proven with good reviews.

If this goes badly I’m blaming you

Get it from Amazon and you can blame them instead :+1:

What interface are you using btw? Looks like an Audio 4 in your setup thread?

Yerp. Really quite want to get a DJM750 but sadly it’s broken with Linux and ALSA at the moment. Hopefully those clever Mixxx/xwax/ALSA chaps will get it working soon though.

edit: The audio interface is broken that is. The midi is class compliant and thus works flawlessly.

My Audio 4 works fine through a non-powered hub on my PC, does the Pi have a low powered (below spec?) USB port or something?

The Pi’s is powered by a 5V microUSB, consumes 3.5W (model B that is) and it’s USB ports reportedly won’t work with devices with a demand over 100 mA.

edit: So basically it’s way under spec.
