Don’t cry for me too much; this happened months ago but it just occurred to me that I hadn’t started a thread here. I’m traveling at the moment but will follow up with real pics of the new setup. But this was pretty devastating when it happened :-/
The landlord neglected to clean the drains on the roof and the ceiling caved in. Thankfully the turntables and mixer were reparable. Not so for a few other items :-/
Yeah unfortunately my landlord is sleazy as hell; there’s definitely a claim and we would probably win but he’ll make it a drawn out uphill battle which isn’t worth my time for the amount :-/ He even said it’s our responsibility to have rental insurance (he has that in the lease), knowing full well rental insurance never covers water damage from the roof (which is considered landlord negligence). The lease provision is not really enforceable (I’ve had legal advice on this) but again it’s a question of whether we want to spend the next five years fighting this and risk paying lawyers’ fees on both sides if we lose in the end. In the end - it’s just stuff, and not worth the aggravation.
On a brighter note, I can very highly recommend Cosmos DJ repair in Hollywood. They were able to repair both the turntable and the mixer.
Odd, over here it would be a simple case of claiming off the landlords insurance. Might take a while, but no real hassle with lawyers or anything else.
Hmmm, that is strange, California has laws in place that protect renters in cases like this (basing this off your claim, that the landlord was negligent [which you would have to prove]). This seems pretty cut and dry and I don’t see the point of involving lawyers…small claims would suffice. But, this is certainly a case-by-case matter, depending on who hears the case, it could go either way. It may be worth trying, or at least talk to your landlord and see if you can work something out.
Good luck! And glad to hear your equipment was repairable!
