So Dillon Francis and Flosstradamus are playing 2 days apart in Philly, at a local venue. Been posting flyers for my new mixtape I put out last week- TrapGear Solid. Would it be seen as I guess shitty… if I were to pass out flyers INSIDE the venue? Its a huge 2,500 person warehouse…
or should flyers only be passed out on the outside/in line for the event? How would you feel if someone came and handed out flyers are your event?
When I was waiting in line to get in a club I wouldn’t have a place to store a flyer, and if I did I would have forgotten it by the time I got home. With the flyer probably ending up being washed and unreadable…
i realize that. i dont expect anyone to save it and frame it. i throw out every flyer i ever get from any show. but i def look at it at least once. and just having the name in my head plants a seed, where next time i see that artists name, I’ll know why/when i remember it. thats how flyers work. im not passing out peices of art work.
the question im asking is do u go INSIDE a venue and pass out ur own flyers… or is that seen as almost invading someone elses turf/time slot to promote ur shit, or are u just supporting the local scene, especially if the music you play is the same category…
as a headliner with the rep those 2 have - I wouldn’t care
as a punter - I wouldn’t want to be hassled inside the venue
as a venue owner - I wouldn’t want people hassling my punters inside the venue. You might get your leaflets taxed at the door
I’d probably drop the flyers somewhere near in a plastic bag where they can be retrieved, enjoy the gig, rush outside and hit the punters on the way out.
Word to this. hit them after the show, you’ll be less likely to be chased off the scene. You talk about handing fliers out on the sidewalk like you’ll be somehow safe from being chased away, not the case. After the show is a better bet.
yea theyre actually pretty small. i shouldnt call them flyers. almost like postcards. but thanks for the advice. i’ll be leaving them in my car till after the show.
My girlfriend and I are on the street team for a few companies here so we always have boxes upon boxes of flyers for all different stuff. We stick to handing them to people outside of the venue AFTER and then inside we leave them on the bars and tables and then car windshields and windows in the surrounding parking lots
It really depends on the venue, and if you’re there on your own dime, or the crew you are doing promo for has an understanding with the venue/crew throwing the show and you’re in on a promotion comp.
Most of the time tactfully doing promo outside the venue is the best bet. If you have a question otherwise, talk to the people throwing the event and ask, or talk to the staff at the event. They won’t mind if you ask, just listen to them if they tell you no.
Flying people’s cars is one of the dumbest things anyone can ever do. Ever. It makes me not want to go to shows I otherwise am planning on going to, and it’s a complete waste of resources.
A lot of venues won’t let you bring in flyers anyhow. I usually have a few in my pockets in case I’m talking up any shows coming up in the near future just to hand to people however.
Really though, flyer someone else’s party like you’d like them to flyer yours: with respect.
Outside the event, as people leave, absolutely fine. On the way in and/in the event, no way, not good.
When I was promoting our events, most of the various organisers of nights around the city were courteous to each other and at the end of the day we all wanted a strong underground scene so it was in everyone’s interest to promote responsibly. Although that didn’t stop the odd person pasting over posters. It was almost a set of unwritten rules between us.
have a few in your back pocket… buy a pack of fags…
when your having a smoke make some friends… tell them about your stuff if they seem interested just say something off the cuff like… ‘actually i might have a flyer here…’
but that would be the extent of it inside the venue… and with that suggestion i wouldnt hand out more then 10
In the UK, it’s actually illegal to flyer/leaflet in a venue without permission from the venue owner. Outside is fair game though. When I used to work on the bar they would have us flyer outside schools for the under-18’s night, and this one time a teacher asked us to move and I was like “What, from this public walk way? Nah, I’ll pass”. Daft bitch.
Personally I would do outside, before the gig, they’re more likely to end up all over the floor/bar at the gig that way, and more people will notice the flyer. Just make sure your name can clearly be seen if you look down at the floor in relatively low light.
You see, if you do it after, it’s just gonna go scrunched up in a pocket, if they’re on the floor of the venue, they’re not gonna disappear until after the gig is empty.
No, it’s not illegal to distribute flyer inside private premises without the owner’s permission in the UK. However if the owner found out and wasn’t happy he can require you to leave his premises. To refuse would be to trespass.
Some local authorities have by-laws restricting people from distributing free materials from certain outdoor public areas. This is usually because of littering problems. Sometimes they operate a licensing scheme.
