Question about electric drumkits.

Question about electric drumkits.

Right so im currently in the process of turning my room into a small studio, now ive been looking at electric drumkits + bass guitars. But im also wondering which i should go for, USB or RCA. i know for sure the bass is going to be RCA. What im also wondering is, i will be inputting them to Ableton Live, how can i have the two connected at the same time on different channels?

Most E-Drumkits i’ve ever seen use balanced TRS out and/or Left (mono).
What is your question? To use a particular connection or how your inputs are channeled? What is your input device?

I’m not getting what you are asking. In my experience (15 years as a bass player) all good instruments output 1/4" cable. You get that into your DAW by using an audio interface like an Mbox or a mixer that plugs in USB for your DAW to recognize.

What I do in my studio is use a Roland V-drum kit and I output that to my Behringer mixer (which is analog but has a USB connection and drivers so I can plug it in) and that takes up 5 or 6 channels, then I run out of my bass amp into another channel on the mixer. My DAW sees the channels on the mixer individually and I an now input all of the sounds directly in. Since I am the only one to play them I don’t record them at the same time, but it would work if I wanted it to.

My DAW?

Sorry, Digital Audio Workstation, in your case it sounds like you’re using Ableton, but there are a lot of them, so the generic DAW is what I used.

So what would you reccomend for a drumkit + bass, theres a high chance both will be used at the same time so theyll be recorded on different channels.

The kit im looking at has, “MIDI In/Out, Master Out, AUX in” Would i be able to use a midi soundcard?

I imagine so, but the documentation should tell you for sure.

As far as making recomendations, that’s hard to do. Lot’s of products and the kind of stuff I would buy is not going to be the kind of stuff you would buy I imagine. What’s your budget?

Wont be paying over £100 for the box. But if i get a midi box then what will i do about the bass, as there is only a 1/4in output.

As far as I know that wouldn’t work, if you’re going to record an actual bass you’ll need to get something with 1/4" input. Basses are not MIDI instruments, there are some high end basses with MIDI functionality, but that’s not what you want to get in to. It may be better for you to use some sort of synth bass.

Like a kaossilator?

Or a good synth keyboard. Also, you’re using Ableton, there has to be a ton of sound libraries available to do drums and bass with. I know guys who do drums, bass, guitar, and all sorts of other stuff just using an APC40 to hammer it out on.

Mine is the KORG version, the very basic version, so i dont get any sound libarary at all.
