Quick headphone question

Quick headphone question

Being the cheap college student I am, I’ve yet to buy a legit sound system and still plug my speakers directly into my laptops headphone jack. (Amazing I know) However, I simply can’t get any sound into my headphones to cue up my tracks.

Am I just that dumb I can’t figure it out, or is it the fact that because I’m plugging directly into my headphone jack it won’t allow my headphones to cue up?

The way you explained it is kinda confusing. Are you asking why your speakers make sound and your headphones don’t out of the same jack or why you can’t cue a track with a separate headphone jack?

The reason you can’t cue is because you only have one sound channel built into your laptop, hence why DJ’s need a sound card (audio interface) -gives you more channels.

I’ll try to rephrase it. I have the S4, which obviously has the headphone jack built into it. But when I plug my headphones into the S4 to cue up tracks I get no sound out of them.

The question I was trying to ask: Does it matter that my speakers are plugged into my headphone jack on the laptop? Or is that irrelevant as to why my headphones won’t produce any sound?

ah. Ok um your problem will be that your audio setup in traktor has your ‘built-in’ sound card selected as your audio device. You would need to have your s4 selected for any audio to pass through it. As far as I know you can’t split certain parts of the audio into different audio devices

Meaning…you’ll need to connect your speakers to your s4 and selected it under your audio device (under audio setup in the traktor settings) for it to work.

Awesome, thank you. I’ll give it a go after work.

btw you won’t need new speakers, if you’re connected to your laptop with a standard 1/8" connector you’ll just need a 1/8" to 1/4" jack converter (like $3 from any electronics store) and you’ll be set.

Also awesome. But I am in the market for new a new sound system anyways. As awesome as my logitech z2300 is (super sarcasm) I need something bigger and better. Any suggestions? Not necessarily party sized speakers, but bigger never the less. I want the VXT 4’s, but spending ~$200 per speaker is a bit steep for my budget. Plus I’d still want a better sub.

the KRK Rokit’s are the most popular monitor speakers but I’m pretty sure they’re like $250 a pop

Otherwise I couldn’t really help you. I get KRK’s with my job and anytime else I just plug into whatever is available :stuck_out_tongue:

Someone posted some Behringer monitors in buy/sell today I think.

Also you would probably be better off with this adapter going to the S4 RCA’s. If you try to use the 1/4" mains you’ll end up spending more money I think.
