I’m thinking about sending in a video to DJTT about the “Racial Divider” within electronic music, what do you think? What Ideas Do You Think I should bring to the table? I know this is a GREAT topic, and should be “Put Out” there, that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to what us dj’s play…All based on/or judged by what our skin tone is?

Ps. I Hope This Topic Will Make It To The Front Page, and Is Discussed When The Video Is Posted
I don’t get the question or what the term “racial divider” is supposed to mean. Do you mean something like black DJs don’t often play Techno and white DJs don’t often play RnB or Hip-Hop? I personally wouldn’t be much interested in it. I don’t think it has to do with race either. There are Chinese and Japaneese DJs that play the one or the other. Where is the racial component there?
I think music selection is more about ethnic cultures or groups. Have a read.
And I’d say it is a fact of life on our wonderful earth and nothing superly good or bad about who plays what. So I don’t see how it could also be a real topic for a heated discussion.
I seriously have never noticed or heard anyone mention any kind of “racial divide” in EDM. Its obviously something that is much more prevalent in non-EDM, but I don’t think you need to write a pamphlet pointing out that rap is more focused with black people and country is more focused with white people.
Tell us a bit about yourself djspinnaspin (not necessarily your ethnicity). As a South African I’ve got lots of opinion, but less inclination to express it. Not sure where this is coming from. Or where it’s going.
Why is “racial division” a bad thing? If all cultures had the same tastes and styles of music the world would be pretty bland. Plus what positive would an article like that have?
That’s also wrong. The #1 consumers of hip hop have been white youth for a long time now. Op is not expressing himself very clearly, I’m not sure exactly what he’s going on about.
racism still exists obviously. i don’t think it’s more or less prevalent within the edm community compared to others. not enough to make a point out of anyways… maybe it’s different in other countries?
On a side note, I remember reading an interview with Jeff Mills (pretty sure it was Jeff Mills at least). Long story short, he owns a cafe of some sort in or around Detroit and he said that he always gets these people young kids traveling there to meet him, and when they ask for him they are always surprised to see that he’s black and don’t believe it’s him at first.
I don’t think there’s any “racial divide” when it comes to electronic dance music. If anything it brings together people from all different backgrounds more than any other music out there I think.
In Detroit, I’ve hardly ever felt some sort of divide between races. I recorded a 16 bar sound clip based off full metal jacket
"I don’t care if you’re a nigger, a faggot, a jew, spick, chink, towel head, christian, muslim, buddhist, or hindu… In the eyes of the bass - all men and women are equally worthless! Now, get down!!! …then comes the drop. People would go ape over it… I used to hold up a big equal sign when the drop hit, too!
Daamn that’s pretty awesome! Out of curiosity though, are you white or black? Maybe I’m too white, but I’d have a hard time getting the balls to drop that.
And back to OP, I really don’t see a racial divider in EDM.
