Reason 5 Announced, Is Anyone Excited?

Propellerhead have up on their site that Reason 5 is coming at the end of the summer, along with Record 1.5. Is anybody going to get excited about this? How many people are still Reason power users, or has the majority moved off to other DAWs?

Phil.

So excited!

OK, but why? I dabble in Reason (I really like the “feel” of the racks and the visual feedback you get from everything, borderline cartoon but extremely powerful), but compared to Ableton 8 it just seems a little retro.

If you not using Live, Reason is a GREAT plugin!

I know I did it with Cubase!

I have mates that still use it…

maybe if they’re planning on getting rid of the whole patching thing. it’s just annoying at this point. plus it slows workflow down.

Being able to run patch cables and configure it anyway you want is one of the stronger aspects of Reason, especially for some one coming from dealing with hardware after a number of years. If you have a basic understanding of signal flow then it shouldn’t slow down your workflow at all, if anything it allows you to e more creative in how you route your audio and what you do with it.

I used reason when it was 2 and 2.5… the drum machine in there was always top notch! The sequencer, well that was a different story. But interested to see what they do with 5.

Problem we found with it …was that its Audio Engine sucked.

So we just routed it to Cubase…and we were off!

I’m sure that anybody that already uses Reason 5 will be very happy to see the new features. However, I can’t help but feel that they’re just too far behind the game. For instance their new Dr. Octo Rex Loop Player makes some great improvements, but is really just adding stuff that you could do in FLStudio or Ableton for years now.

It’s still the same paradigm, and I doubt the new version is going to make anyone switch from their current DAW.

I really only use Reason for its synths. Re-Wire them into Logic and I am off.
Would be interesting to see what the come up with to bring the program back onto the playing field with other DAWS.

I’m very happy for the improvements. Can’t wait to see what their next features are over the next few days…

same. Reason is dope, but there’s so much that can be done to make it better. get rid of the need for Recyle for starters, but I doubt Pheads are gonna do that

After a week of teasers, any more interest?

The sampling feature seems good and the drum machine looks interesting, kinda Maschine but to Reason…

Don’t see them winning over people from other DAWs, but those already working in it have some new tools in the toolbox.

Phil.

You know there are Live artists out there who can load up ALL of their projects into reason, having like 25 instances running - all without hurting the CPU - cant do that with programs like insert your fav DAW here

yep! bento is right

i rewire everything into cubase or ableton (depends what i am doing) from reason 4 at the moment.. i can do lots more with less processing! most of the time i’ll sound design a sound i like.. then bounce it as an audio file to save processing.. but doing it all in reason (for say, a bass part) then jsut rewiring it into your DAW helps alot… especially if you use alot of processes or big projects

Would you guys recommend reason 5 to a brand new beginner of producing?
Or is ableton better in that way?

Reason 5 is pretty dope. I still think Logic Pro is better then most DAWS though. The sampling is good in reason 5, but still not as complex as the ultrabeat in logic. The interface is horrible and makes most tasks a PAIN. The quality of your projects is pretty low in reason, if you use the same samples and stuff in ableton or logic you will notice a big difference.

Out of reason, ableton, and logic pro…Logic pro takes the cake for me as it has the best sampling(ultrabeat has incredible ways to humanize your sounds), best interface(can’t tell you how many times I accidently drop files in the wrong place in ableton), and by far the highest quality sound of default plugins that I’ve used. Also managing files/organizing projects is very very easy and a lot of things are set out for a baby to use.
