Removing caps
I can’t remove the caps on my S4 to save my life…
any suggestions on how to go about it? I tried a spoon, but it didn’t fit underneath.

Check and make sure they’re not secured by a set screw in the side of the cap, then use a thinner, plastic pry bar. I have one that I got at some point from OWC (made to pry apart laptops and monitor bezels) that works great for things like this.
I just replaced my stock knobs with Chroma Caps last week on my S4. Some of them were stuck on tight, but most came off pretty easily by pulling straight up. For the tight ones, I used a plastic knife. I had to pull up pretty hard to get the knife under the knob, then with constant upward pressure it finally gave way. Be sure not to scratch the surface tho. A credit card might do the trick also…
They are called spudgers?
Sounds right.
I say prybar.
Got em. Just had to get a smaller spoon!
I always just used a loonie or a quarter.
Try a chainsaw maybe (if they’re really on there).
Use two plastic knives or similar.
Slide one knife under each side at the same time, and push both up together.
This is the crucial trick, as force is applied upwards to the cap evenly on both sides.
With a spoon or one knife, you are actually slightly bending the shaft and possibly the solder/mounting. Its a great way to damage pots.
The NI Maschine Custom Kit has a CRT (Cap Removal Tool) included. Ask someone you know who has a Maschine Custom Kit and you’re good to go ![]()
I recommend using guitar picks for such things. They make the best spudgers.
Agreed
Two plastic teaspoons or start lifting weights ![]()
