Saving a Club Hero (Technics Refub)

Saving a Club Hero (Technics Refub)

My recent work…

These Limited Gold edition 1200s (110v) belong to a popular club here in Manila, Republiq. Before that, they were used first in Temple Bar, Greenbelt (from 2002), Embassy Superclub (2004-2010) then Republiq (2010-2012). Unfortunately, the condition was so severe and so many parts had to be replaced. The power supplies were also busted as well as the drive ICs because they were plugged into a 220v outlet.

As I finished cleaning the platter and repainted the dots, I started to reface them. Unfortunately, this is what happened:

The gold/chrome platting has peeled off. I had worked on a pair of Limited Gold edition before with almost the same condition but never experienced anything like this. On close up pictures, you will see that the aluminum diecast metal had also been affected by the corrosion. Powdery white substance can also be seen as a result of the reaction. Some parts of the platter’s upper & lower lips and dots were eaten by the corrosion.

The platting on the start/stop and 33/45 button have also been chipped. So I replaced both platters and start/stop, 33/45 assemblies with non-platted parts.

Some of the gold platting on the pop-up lamp canister and strobe canister, have also tarnished and faded so there was nothing more I could do to save them unless have them chromed and electro-platted again which will cost a lot.

-Scraped and sanded the body and repainted to black. Wrapped with carbon fiber vinyl sticker (for automobiles)
-Repainted rubber base cabinet
-Cleaned & rebuilt the tonearm assembly and calibrated
-Replaced RCA cables and connectors
-Eliminated ground wires
-Replaced all LEDs to super bright white (strobe, 33/45. pop-up lamp, pitch indicator)
-Rewound power supplies and drive ICs replaced

Here is the finished project:

Hope you guys like it.

super clean mate… got to love it when someone has given love to some 1200’s!!!

NICE job Nick..i’m loving it!

what did you do to restore the pitted platter?

Nice job you’ve done there - but I would have had them LTD’s done professionally…

Thanks man!

I replaced the platter. The corroded ones are still with me and haven’t decided on what to do with them yet.

Thanks!

How professional are you saying?

Like this?

A pair of SL1200LTD Limited series I did last year. The picture below is the condition of the decks before I took them apart.

Scraped the paint to aluminum diecast

Disassembled the power switch assembly…

After cleaning the tone arm section…

Re-built and calibrated the tone arm assembly…

SL-1200 Limited plate before repaint and reface…

…then

Finished project.

Replaced all lights to super bright white. Strobe, 33/45 and pop up lamps

I get a warm fuzzy feeling inside when I see people take care of/refurbish a nice pair of 12s.

I didn’t rate them that much myself outside of djing as I had a Linn Sondek LP12 …

I have used so many shitty condition Technics in clubs its unreal… wandering pitch… very rare they would be in tip top condition to really get into mixing without fighting the wandering pitch.

But you have done a wonderful job there… well done.:+1:

Thanks man!

Thanks!

really legit, must be an awesome rewarding feeling to play on those

Awesome work! congratulations, and i dont think refurbishing 1200’s gets more professional than this. you should post a step by step guide… if you dont mind sharing your secrets

Good work!

I searched for this thread earlier but couldn’t find it for some reason

I picked up a used and abused pair of 1200s myself this morning and the main problem is corrosion on the platters. I put up some pics on this thread: http://forum.djtechtools.com/showthread.php?t=52711&p=517397&viewfull=1#post517397

Not as bad as the ones at the start of this thread but one of them is bad enough. What would you recommend as a first step?

Thanks! I have documented pictures of some of my work at my site here:

Oh the condition on the pictures you posted is very much treatable. You just need to scrape the paint, reface them with a 400c grit sandpaper, then followed by 800c.

Love the carbon fiber idea…looks very good!

Thanks Chris!
