Greetings all. I’ve been out of the DJ scene for a while but am getting back in and need some pointers from all the d&b heads I know are on this forum. So here you go - school me on techstep and neurofunk. What differentiates the two styles and give me some essential listening. The more hardcore, the better. Have at it!
Techstep and Neurofunk are my favourite’s of Drum n Bass so I mainly mix those…
Some essential listening? I’ll give you artists.
Neurofunk: Noisia, OLD Pendulum (stuff like Vault), Hive, Keaton, Calyx, Teebee, Ed Rush & Optical, Dom & Roland, Spor, Bad Company UK, Konflict, The Upbeats, Prolix, Phace
Techstep: Technical Itch, Limewax, Cooh, Audio (sorta Neuro sometimes), Gein, Current Value, The Panacea (kinda hybrid Techstep with Hardcore), B-Key, Dylan, Counterstrike, Raiden
I know it’s a lot but it’s good.
Also on the shameless self plug I have tech/neuro DnB mix up on my soundcloud, link in my sig.
Thanks for the responses. Killer mix Citizen! I agree that a lot of the time subgenres get a little out of hand but they are useful when there’s a BIG difference between the styles i.e. liquid vs. techstep/neurofunk. Much more specific than just saying drum n bass.
Thanks man, glad I could help.
And I hear you on the differences… try mixing a liquid song with some techstep and chances are people will look at you like you’re crazy And yeah, far more specific than saying just DnB, I’m constantly surprised by the sheer variety of sounds there are within the genres let alone the subgenres lol.
It’s just like saying “I’m into rock” vs. “I’m into death metal” or “I’m into indie rock.” However it does get out of control when you start investigating all the death metal sub-subgenres like Troll Metal…
Haha, just read the wikipedia page for troll metal, sounds like an interesting genre. Glad I could inject some adrenaline
@lola: good stuff, always good to see another fan Actually, I did know they got it from Vision upsidedown/episdnumop… Not 100% sure on this but I think they got the Vision thing from a tape like the ones you put in a vcr.
They make great stuff and not just DnB anymore too, definitely dig the electro they’ve been making.
ah now that you mentioned the VCR i think we watched the same clip from dnb arena
yeah i love noisia and its a recent love too. when split the atom came out i listened to the album on repeat for a month. everyone around me got tired of it. also i listened to your mix, love the energy… its dark and familiar
lola, we may well have watched the same clip lol. good to hear you liked my mix
Karlos… you crack me up mate.
These hi-tech zimmer frames… you can use that touchscreen to DJ right? If so then Rana June will be able to continue making a fool of herself 60 years from now
the difference between techstep and neurofunk is impossible to describe since they overlap so much. One man’s neurofunk is another man’s techstep… essentially they’re one and the same.
