Serial and USB Confusion

I just received my firmware kit and watched the tutorial on how to install it. I understand I am going to run a serial cable from the computer to the firmware. What I am unclear about is the USB. Will I also connect a USB cable from the VCI into the computer–resulting in a serial to serial connection from computer to vci, and usb to usb connection from vci to computer?:confused:

The serial cable is used for programming, the USB cable just provides the power for the VCI-100.
