should i trade my cdj900s for technics mk5’s and serato??
should i trade my cdj900s for technics mk5’s and serato sl2 or sl3?? is that a good or bad deal. i like my cdjs but am having trouble getting used to them. i dont know im torn between doing this.
Well for one, it’s a good deal as MK5s are the best next to M5Gs and having a pair of 1200s is pretty much the staple of a DJ. If it comes with Serato, you’re all set and you’d be ready to start spinning. Once you get on Vinyl, you’re not going to want to spin on a CDJ.
Monetarily, it’s a fair trade. Serato + MK5’s vs CDJ-900’s.
The difference being, do you want to be tied to a computer? With the CDJ’s, you’re not. Burn CD’s, use Thumbdrives, and mix in that manner. With the TT’s, you’re going to need a decent computer, and you’ll be using that as an essential part of your setup. There’s nothing wrong with it, and personally I really enjoy Serato (and feel it’s been a great aid in teaching me how to beatmatch using the visuals and then moving on to not needing them).
Think long and hard about it though, because it’s really not the easiest thing to switch back from. There’s something to be said for not using a computer in your setup, and there is also something to be said for the pure joy that comes from spinning vinyl (DVS or not).
It’s something I debate often with myself, as I’d like to remove the computer from my setup but I just don’t want to give up the turntables lol. And I can’t afford to keep up with releases on vinyl.
If you’re familiar with turntables and enjoy mixing on them I’d say its a great trade. I recently setup my decks again with serato and love it. My S4 has been sitting in its case for about 2 months. The 900s seem great too, I guess its a toss up on what you really enjoy more.
With 900s…yeah…I’d trade. You’re doing this at home, right?
If you have to spin on CDJs at a gig, you know what to expect. And likely you’ve figured out how rekordbox works…or you’ve figured out how to get tracks into the CDJs somehow that works. So, you can always keep doing that. And if you find out that you really like Serato, you can bring it to a club and use their CDJs without lugging the tables around if you don’t want to……or they could have them.
Basically……Do you want turntables at home? Or do you want to keep CDJs at home?
If the money is even close, I’d switch in a heart beat. I have issues with that money being even because my first m5g was $350, so it sounds really lopsided in terms of money to me. But if that’s the way things are now, that’s the way things are.
I’d do it. If you don’t already have TT’s. Like JesC said. You can’t go into a store and buy a pair. You can with 900s.
Since the 1200s were discontinued, I’ve been buying them up and collecting them. Well, actually, hoarding them. My wife has threatened to call the TV show numerous times. LOL
Will you be using the TT’s or their just something that you want because it’s cool and real DJ’s have them? if yes then don’t trade but if you are sure you will use them do it by all means.
If you’re gonna get MK5’s I’d suggest searching around on Craigslist. I bought mine for $325 and $350 not too long ago. Maybe just sell one 900 and get two M3D’s or MK5’s, and either buy SL1 or save up a little more for SL2/SL3. At least you’d still have one CDJ.
i have been a vinyl dj for 21 years and recently leapt into the digital world by
going out and buying a pair of 900’s. i have to say i am so glad i did it. my only
bit of advice would be to bear in mind the ability to ‘lock in’ mixes on cdj’s is
so much easier. i know alot of people harp on about using the bpm display is
a form of cheating, but the reality is you still have to lock it in initially with your
ears. so, depending what type of music you play and if you like to mix for long
periods while playing with effects and loops, i would think very carefully about
going to technics. i have both a pair of 1200 mk5’s and the 900’s and it’s the
1200’s that are gathering dust quicker now. albeit gathering while looking pretty
damn beautiful. my heart belongs to the 1200’s, but the 900’s are feckin’ hot !
