I’m a bit red faced as I’m asking this but it’s something that has been bugging me!
How come the majority of DJ’s when in their bedroom still stand up to scratch and all? Like on stage I can understand with the whole performance aspect to it!
But is it actually easier to move around the tables and stuff when standing up? Does sitting down teach you bad/lazy techniques?
I’m really just approaching this with a Turntablists/Scratch DJ’s perspective in mind!
Thanks guys, Hope I explained myself alot!
Because when I get mine set up in my room I want to work out what sort of table I need to get so I don’t get my tables here and have to make do with what I’ve got!
Well IMHO it’s a good thing djs actually stand up while doing their thang…for ex…at the club where i play im placed at this ground-level stage, right in the middle of the dancefloor…if people saw me sitting i don’t think it would transmit them that energy that i think every dj should transmit to the crowd…at least I would’nt get excited when i hear the wildest thing goin on…turn to give a look at the dj booth…and see a guy nappin in his armchair XDXD. However,I do usually sit down at home when im preparin my gig, settin up the cue points, loops etc.
I sit down when preparing at home but stand while gigging it. When you stand its easier to show your really into the music, if your into it its more likely other people will be into it as well
As I can imagine, ecspecially when performing turntablism, you need to be around and over the decks for maximum control and not to just be limited to an arm’s length from the chair!
Depends of what I am doing, when recording I like to stand up, to move to the beat and where it is taking me.
When just casual training, I might just sit around for a while.
sitting down is for office clerks and desk jockeys not disc jockeys (ha disc jockey).
If im fannying around with Maschine or on my pc ill sit but as for DJing whether its at home or at gigs i stand. If you practice at home sitting down, maybe when you go to a gig you wont be used to standing and topple over ??? it could happen !!!
I sit down when i’m at home just messing around. My vci and my laptop are right next to my main PC so usually when i decide to play some tunes on traktor its a case of turning my wheely chair slightly to the left and open traktor .
When i have other people around i’d be standing up though, if i saw a DJ sitting down i’d assume he/she was sitting down due to a dissability or just plain laziness
I use to sit down quite a lot, but after standing up, and bringing my gear up to the proper level (around belly button for me), I find my mixing and the overall fun I have has gone up. Only reason I sat down was because of back issues.
Haha true that Chilly Man! I guess there is even DJ’s out there who may even Choreograph there sets?
And Tekki I can just imagine you with a Guitar strap attached to your BCR2000 jumping across the room like Angus Young from ACDC and at the end of the practice set running and jumping off the end of your bed and rolling along the ground in a fit of ecstasy as you make those last Tweaks of your performance!
You perform like you practice, so practice right! I used to have that drilled in my head in high school band, and it is really true. I had a standing set up for about a year and a half, then had to move rooms and made the decision to set the kit up for sitting and standing. You get way less work done sitting, and you aren’t going to be able to rock out to the beat as well sitting either. Now my setup doesn’t allow me to sit, and it just feels better.
It is turning into a bit of a lair. There’s currently around 180 degrees of gear around me. I could probably fill out the other 180 degrees with maybe a massive TV, a microwave, a small beer fridge then there’d be just enough crawl space to get out to relieve myself every few hours… Hmm maybe not
I do stand up for practise occationally. But it doesn’t work out so well because my desk isn’t very high and i’m rather tall. I can feel the hunchback forming when i stand and practise I do agree that you can definately rock out more when you stand though. I may have to invest in some sort of box device to but my mixer on.
hey man, I have the same problem, but I put a box under my mixing stuff along with a piece of foam to get rid of the hunchback. I love dancing while I mix.
