OT:SL-1500 questions
Although djtt is a controlerism fourm but I also know a great deal of you have worked with/ still work on vinyl too, so I figured it wouldnt be to out of place to post this here. At least I hope its not
Ive been wanting a turntable for a long time now and I finally picked up an sl 1500 mk1 today while I was in Pittsburgh. My intention with this is mainly just to use it for listening and I know thats what it should be used for but I was wondering how hard it would be to mix or scratch with it. A buddy of mine has an sl-1700 mk1 and while hes not the best in the world, he can scratch on it without to much trouble and our plan is to set up the two with his mixer and try our best this summer. How much of a hassle would I be getting myself into if we tried this?
Does it even have a pitch slider?!
slider no, knob adjustment yes. im fully expecting it to pose as a pain in the ass. I still have to get a new cartridge for it in order to see how well that works.

I have no experience with this, however I feel that its the same concept and it shouldn’t be that bad. It’s just a different motion, and it may be slightly harder to beat match, but I don’t foresee it being a huge problem.
I’m just wondering if it being a consumer audio deck that it may not be as durable. Is there any reason you didn’t get a 1200? They are pretty cheap these days!
The lack of them around here and the fact that the 1500 was purely an impulse buy because Ive been dieing for a turntable. From what Ive read, 1200, 1500, and 1700’s all have the same motor though. However that could be a lie so feel free to call me out on that. I was playing around with it and it seems to have an alright amount of torque to it. but then again I wouldnt have anything to compare it to
Im REALLY hoping the pitch knobs are the same concept. if they are im thinking of just marking the knob with a little tick so i know what position its at.
anyone have any budget cartridge recommendations while were at it?
The 1500 pitch knob has a 10% pitch range, so it’s gonna be really hard to be precise. You expected hell, you’re gonna get it!
Hifi-wiae, this is a nice old solid turntable.
Budget cart: If you really want something for DJing, get some cart that’s made for it, otherwise you will kill your carts AND your vinyls pretty fast. Try to get an Ortofon OM Pro, which is basically the headshell mounted version of the Concorde pro, but quite a bit cheaper. Relatively easy to mount and adjust, and replacement styli will be easily obtainable.
