Just wondering if anyone else here plays as part of a “DJ team” with multiple people playing simultaneously or back-to-back? For the past decade I’ve always been solo, but recently teamed up with a couple of other guys and I’m having WAY more fun now
i would have voted both but there was no option, so i chose group. i love to do back2back gigs with my buddies as i love to play solo gigs as well. when it comes down to production i feel even more comfy in a duo. always depends on your partner
Me and my buddy Vinny tag team every Friday as a part of the set. We play for 4 hours, we usually switch off for a while and the last hour we just battle track for track, and that’s when the people of the crowd get most involved.
We both know each others tunes, how we mix, etc so it makes it a lot of fun as long as you two figure out before hand as to who does what.
I won’t mess with the platters while he blends, unless I can clearly see he doesn’t notice and I nudge it back on beat.
I use the color fx (DJM 850) since I stand on the left side and I would rather not reach over him, he toys with the rest of the fx.
Just give your partner his space, and don’t try to do too much and make your buddy screw up.
Damn, you can’t edit polls can you? Would’ve made sense having a “Both” option
That’s kinda what we’ve been doing; one of us handles effects while another does transitions, then we swap round every few tracks and swap roles. Still working on it as the other guys aren’t as comfortable using Traktor effects as I am (one’s a VDJ user and the other is used to CDJs), but they’re picking it up quickly
Group jams are awesome. Not only to you get to do what you love with some like minded buddies, but you also can feed off each other creatively, and maybe even learn something and get out of your “i’ve been djing for a year and know everything” bullshit opinion which always makes me laugh.
i totally forgot the point of being forced to actually beatmatch and not relying on sync, when playing back2back on different platforms/system/controler/whatsoever. that´s always nice and you don´t get lazy.
ive always done solo, I’m having hard time finding someone who is into deep house and some trance. Everybody just wants trap and dubstep around here. its kinda annoying.
Video of my last group session, will have a better one tomorrow; actually going to try to remember to take my proper camera down, phones just don’t cut it haha !
Word of advice MDC.. don’t play mainroom tracks when the dance floor is empty, you will intimidate the patrons. You need to introduce dancers with deeper more mellow stuff, it takes hours to get the crowd ready for the main set, if you have to play deep house for three hours until the dance floor fills out so be it. But nothing says “this club is shit let’s go somewhere good” more than an empty floor playing main room tracks.
And stop messing with the volume faders, it is unnecessary and a perfect example of ADHDJing. I Don’t want to start a war but if you were beatmatching you would have something to do instead of messing with effects and cutting the sound out at inappropriate times continually. Finally if you feel you have to cut the tracks volume have another track playing and swap them instead of having dead air but definitely don’t do it every track.
Sorry to keep jumping on you, but it’s for your own good bro
And in answer to the question you will always grow more if you are part of a duo, you will lose the safety of a pre-planned set and have to fend for yourself with only you musical knowlege.
Haha, well we were pretty much the only venue with ANYONE in that night anyway; Wednesdays here are fucking dire… you’re lucky to get 30 people in through the door all night, so basically we were just playing for the staff and ourselves Now that the weather has picked up tomorrow should be MUCH better numbers-wise all over town, fingers crossed. Not sure what you mean about the faders though, I rarely manipulate them, and when I do it’s just for 4/1 kick slams from track B into track A… if you meant in the first 15 minutes or so of the video, those are the other guys I play with; my segment was towards the end.
EDIT: An example of pretty much the only thing I do with the faders is at 20:00
Gainesville is close enough to the border Excep the nightlife is AWFUL. We have Ryan Lochte picking up sorority girls half his age. That’s about it. Although we’re supposed to have a new reality show highlighting the night life… -_____________-
