Since I’m “in between” projects, earlier today I thought it would be cool if I put together a track that sampled (or recreated) some of the biggest sounds that became staples in EDM.
Maybe you guys have heard mashups where 25 songs are crammed into two minutes. That’s not what I’m trying to do. I want to find an elegant way to reference and/or use these sounds.
I’m looking for things that really are classics, such as
The Amen Break
The ‘Hoover’ Sound
Acid Synths
I’m looking for anything that really paved the way for other music. I know you guys can think of more than I can off the top of my head.
Oh, and if anyone wants to do a mini-collaboration for this, that would be cool.
some music history trivia: the handclap most likely dates back to the cholera outbreaks of the 15th century, it was a way of letting people know you were infected.
Check and check. Nice call gentlemen. Forgot all about the old school drum machine samples.
Check!
It’s weird that you mention that. I was thinking about classic vocal samples to use a few minutes ago. Unfortunately a lot of them are still (over)used today and it might just sound tacky. Actually the whole song will probably sound tacky. But that’s kinda what I want to do.
DM were MAJOR pioneers of synth sequencing in their early days from Roland to Korg to Moog, etc. So many “retro” sounds I’ve heard in modern EDM and loved can be heard and rediscovered in their tunes.
Surprised no one has mentioned Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire. Not sure if any obvious examples of them have been reused but they certainly made excellent use of samples. Sensoria remains one of my favorite of the early 80s. Watched it on Night Flight in '83 and never looked at music the same again.
