Sounds that define the history of EDM

Sounds that define the history of EDM

Since I’m “in between” projects, earlier today I thought it would be cool if I put together a track that sampled (or recreated) some of the biggest sounds that became staples in EDM.

Maybe you guys have heard mashups where 25 songs are crammed into two minutes. That’s not what I’m trying to do. I want to find an elegant way to reference and/or use these sounds.

I’m looking for things that really are classics, such as

  • The Amen Break
  • The ‘Hoover’ Sound
  • Acid Synths

I’m looking for anything that really paved the way for other music. I know you guys can think of more than I can off the top of my head.

Oh, and if anyone wants to do a mini-collaboration for this, that would be cool.

the fresh sample

jk.

Roland 808 kick drum and “handclap” sounds.

some music history trivia: the handclap most likely dates back to the cholera outbreaks of the 15th century, it was a way of letting people know you were infected.

the dog bark sample! the 606 cowbell (I think it was 606? idk though). and the 90s WHOO!

This sound (0:13 onwards):

Is a really short piece of this:

P.S. This is still surprisingly effective.

Holy crap!! I always felt as if that was a familiar sample, but never knew where from.

Oh yeah how about the Chicago song where they sample “street sounds twirlin in my mind” (though they change it to “these sounds falling in my mind”)…

James Brown’s “whoo yeah!” from Lyn Collins’ “Think” is another classic (not to mention the “Funky Drummer” break)

And this is going back but you probably want “pump up the volume” in there somewhere…

Check and check. Nice call gentlemen. Forgot all about the old school drum machine samples.

Check!

It’s weird that you mention that. I was thinking about classic vocal samples to use a few minutes ago. Unfortunately a lot of them are still (over)used today and it might just sound tacky. Actually the whole song will probably sound tacky. But that’s kinda what I want to do.

I could be wrong, but I believe the track is “The Bomb” by Kenny Dope and The Bucketheads.

Yep that’s the track, but the sample is from an old song by Chicago in the 1970s (I think it’s called Street Player)

Josh Wink - Higher State of Consciousness

its early 90’s (1994) but its still defining…

a few..

you said history of Sprockets right?

DM were MAJOR pioneers of synth sequencing in their early days from Roland to Korg to Moog, etc. So many “retro” sounds I’ve heard in modern EDM and loved can be heard and rediscovered in their tunes.

Gary…'nuff said

I feel Love by Donna Summer is still a classic

Surprised no one has mentioned Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire. Not sure if any obvious examples of them have been reused but they certainly made excellent use of samples. Sensoria remains one of my favorite of the early 80s. Watched it on Night Flight in '83 and never looked at music the same again.
