Speakers

Speakers

So after cashing in my school books and making some other transactions I am now sitting on about 200 dollars. I would like to either nice monitors for production, or a pair of speakers to use for parties (maybe 50-100 people). Preferably I would like to get powered speakers, that don’t need an amp. I also am considering going the DIY route. This looks to be very feasible, since it seems to be extremely cost effective. I have looked at some of the kits on zalytron.com (although honestly I don’t know a tweeter from a bass horn jk but you get the idea). So speaker deities of the great DJTT, (aka limey) lend me your thoughts. Would I be better off building studio monitors from scratch or trying to make a larger type loudspeaker/s? Also I would most likely be looking into getting a pre-chosen kit and assembling it, and I am up for making my own speaker enclosure (I have some woodworking skills), so if you have any kits you can recommend that would be awesome. Also if you guys know of any all inclusive guides for noobies like me that would be sick too.
Thanks,
Matt

If you don’t go the building direction, I would save up a bit more cash and get some Tapco Thumps. They’re around 250 each and are the best you can get in that cash field.

may i suggest…

the Tower of Power?

build this and you will be god.

I only knew of a different tower of power, ask bobby brown (aka bobby brown by frank zappa (for a killer choon)).

Or consult the real Tower of Power

ahaha, that’s awesome. the japanese subtitles make it even better. (that drumset is a beast too)

but seriously, if i had the cash i’d build my own. actually thinking of replacing the actual speaker cones in my big wooden cabinets with some that aren’t from the mid-80s. have you found a good place to buy just the speaker drivers?

sorry couldnt resist posting this…

bout to hit that guy up whenever dubstep catches on in india

I don’t think $200 will get you anything decent AUD or USD.

Go for some secondhand Wharfdale speakers from the late 80s, still with hardwooden cases and stuff. I’ve bought mine for 60 euros a pop and never looked back. There’s hardly any speakers out there for that money, that gives that kind of full sound.

This would go well with the tower of power

The Matterhorn

Well if i wanted to pimp out a container ship, i’d get in touch with these guys!

@mpetersen

think you should save up a bit more and get yourself a decent pair of the powered speakers…the tapco mentioned before are good value my friend bought himself a pair and the sound was good… another brand you should consider is the behringers i cant say much about the durability of these two products cuz my friend juz recently bought them maybe other members can give advice on that…

if your goin the diy route you can check out this link…

Thanks everyone for the replies, I was thinking of saving some more money definitely, sorry if I was unclear on that, the tapco thumps look good, what about the behringers? I ahve been looking at them and am a bit confused about which model to get, does anyone know of any sites with reviews for them and maybe a guide for which would fit me best?

Ed. Also I think I will go about building a sub later perhaps to go with the tapco’s.

The best value for money monitors on the market i think are the Mackie MR8’s

You’re not getting anything for $200…

if you want to do production, get monitors, if you want to play for a party of the size you described, look into the thumps. There unfortunately isn’t any crossover there at all :disappointed:

yeah i wouldn’t imagine there being many speakers that could be used as monitors (comfortably), and support a 50-100 party. headphones ftw

Yeah, headphones are the best, in my opinion, for production work. It allows you to work with a specific stereo setting, so you can really notice and tweak panning parameters in your mixes or projects. I have tried to use my Yamaha MSR’s for studio style listening and monitoring but they don’t seem to really resonate the full sound spectrum of the noise/song/music until turned up to a slightly uncomfortable or unwanted level for a studio setting. Plus I live in a house with 5 other college guys, so when I get inspiration at 1am on a tuesday, booting up the sound system isn’t too practical or wanted.

I am guessing most of your 50 to 100 people parties won’t be full of audiophiles so you could always aim for a more consumer directed sound system, with less of a hz response. Just be sure to find a balance in the size of your speaker drivers and wattage, according to your usage. Bottom line, you won’t be getting anything spectacular or new for 2 c’s.

Using headphones solely for studio work isn’t ideal, theres a huge ammount of stereo separation. There are VST’s that combat this but its not perfect science.

Awwww… I was expecting to see some sort of catastrophic effect on the guy standing in the container at the end of the video. :disappointed:
