Straight Serial Cable vs. Not Null Modem
I just bought a cable from Amazon.com
Amazon.com
It says it is a modem cable.
So is this a null modem cable ???
And when I briefly went through this site
I’m still not sure what is the difference between two.
Do I need to purchase a new cable ???
Or
Can I still use the cable I have bought before???

This is what I found out about Modem Cable vs. Null Modem Cable.
I still do not understand what they do…
All I needed to know was, if I have got the right Serial Cable.
Modem Cable = Straight Serial Cable.
Null Modem Cable = Crossover Cable.
I still have not updated the firmware yet, because I do not have serial port on my laptop, so that I have ordered an express card. (Still waiting for it to come).

I need to buy a Modem Cable !!!

You do not want a null modem cable. You do want a standard serial cable.

I decided to not to get a cable from DjTechtools, because I did not wanted to pay $10 for a cable.
Also they do not really explain well…
They say SERIAL CABLE.
They don’t mention about that the cable need to be 9pin MALE to FEMALE Straight Cable.
Also the term NULL MODEM CABLE drove me crazy !!!
When I purchased the firmware chip.

What I’m trying to say about that letter is, they could have colorful PDF file on the website with specific details of what to do OR they need to make another video of how to do it.
Most of people doesn’t even know the difference between “STANDARD SERIAL CABLE” & “NULL MODEM CABLE”.
They need to explicitly explain the importance of getting right cable and not missing any of steps. (On the video, THEY DID MENTION NOT TO GET usb to serial cable !!!)
And also I have read that Ean did miss a step in the video…
Otherwise people will have difficult time trying to get cheaper cable from AMAZON or EBAY.
Although I have bought the VCI-100 more than a month ago, I still haven’t used the mixer properly. Because I was confused with VGA port and SERIAL port, Cable problem, and buying EXPRESS CARD to upgrade the firmware.:eek:

Also little tip, you coulda made a serial cable for about 60 pence rather than spending 2.99 on one

Hi photojojo, i googled standard serial cable and had a look at the images and there´s all kinds of standard serial cables.
I´m about to order the firmware kit but wanted to make sure i can buy the right cable without ordering it from DJTT cause t would be a lot more expensive.
On my PC motherboard i have a female printer socket of 25 pins which i bellieve is a com port. Can i use this port?
If i can use this port can you send me a Amazon link or any other link of the cable i need that will work with the upgrade kit?
Would be very appreciated as i´m a bit confused with so many serial cables available.
I also have a 15 female pin port on my motherboard which i believe is to plug in a monitor. Does this work too?

You need a 9 pin serial port. I don’t think it will work with either of those other ports, but I’m not 100% sure about that. I used a Dynex UBDB9 USB to serial cable when I did mine. No guarantees if it’ll work for you.
