So I’m spinning a 1920’s themed party in a couple weeks and thought it’d be cool to mix in some stuff inspired by the era. Obviously, swing house is gonna be perfect, but I usually spin hip hop as well and sorta work the tempo back and forth all night.
Anyone know any solid swing/20’s derived hip hop?
I’ve got “I Am Music” by Common and “Show Me What You’ve Got” and “Roc Boys” by Jay-Z and… that’s it. Any help?
Us3 Has an album on blue note and so does madlib. Really anything by these guys is jazzy and just great, i agree with Jurassic 5 as well, and some tribe called quest too. I would really recommend madlib, especially yesterdays new Quintet, and maybe look through blue note for other hip hop groups (Blue Note is my favorite). And for staying in that era Gershwin was a big one you gotta play some of his stuff. Enjoy!
That’s all great jazzy hip-hop, but the thing about most of the jazz inspired hip hop is it’s mostly borrowing from be-bop, jazz-funk and to a lesser extent, free jazz forms. 20s styles like ragtime, classic and hot jazz aren’t really represented.
Swing appeared in the 30s, so it isn’t too far out of place, though it’s probably associated in the public mind with the 40s.
I used to gig in a jazz club, where hip-hop was welcomed, and I used to play a lot of the stuff listed by Glen. It will work in a jazzy context.
This is a good example of some 20s stuff but probably not to the tastes of today’s audience.
