Technique is not the point.
So, what is it about? The music. Always the music…

“Raymond Chandler has no technique and is fresh out of ideas”
Karlos Santos.
Teehee.
Technique is not the point you say? Well then I guess I’ll just rock iTunes at the next party I play at. I’m sure everyone will love that
Touche!
However if you were in a booth and nobody could see that you were using Itunes eliminating the punter to promoter expectation that a DJ uses gear too complicated for mortals to understand do you really think that it would be impossible to rock the floor?
Are we ‘really’ gonna go over this again.
Its all horses for courses.
If the music you are playing requires a lot of technique and or technology then you need it for the crowd to appreciate it to its full extent.
If you are playing a floor that doesnt require complex mixing techniques then you will get away with iTunes or whatever.
This is one of those non-discussions. Its a false opposition.
Technique will never replace music choice.
But if your music choice requires technique, said music will not sound as it should without technique.
QBerts fame is down to technique, the music choice is secondary but incredibly important all the same. The balance is more towards technique.
Richard Norris (Beyond The Wizards Sleeve) technique isnt that great, his mixes arent always that good (in fact the track often runs out before hes cued the next one cus hes dancing around) but his music choice is sublime beyond words. The balance is more towards music choice.
There is no correct answer to this question. Its a non-question.
Its like asking “whats more wet Pepsi or Coke”

“who the fuck is raymond chandler?”
-duerr
“Hello my name is Im Raymond Chandler”
Raymond Chandler
I think the point of the quote isn’t that technique doesn’t matter. It’s that when all you are concerned with is technique you have lost the dream. When applied to DJing, when all you are concerned with is new toys and new tricks you’ve lost what we are really here (too much caffeine, originally typed that as “hear”… wtf?) for, what really drew us here.
The music.
Technique comes along with practice… Practicing is just too much fun…
Have fun änd you’ll get some technique.
Music is central
the problem with quotes like that are… generally people who “get it” don’t get there from reading quotes and have some eureka moment because of what some self-righteous wanker professed as gospel… and the people who don’t “get it” never will, even after reading such quotes.
“I’m Raymond Chandler and it feels mighty pleasant when i touch my privates.”
-Raymond Chandler
people who don’t “get it” might learn to get it. We all grow through time. Interpreting a quote has just as much to do with the words being used as the meaning that is ascribed to those words by the reader. That quote means one thing to me and another to you. That’s just my interpretation. There’s nothing wrong with that.
But I, personally, refuse to agree with you. People grow and change, and with their experiences their appreciation and understanding of things change. On a general level, you’re understanding of that quote will be very different 10 years from now, in my opinion.
<3
the quote isn’t that abstract that it is open to interpretation, it’s meaning is pretty straight forward.
“Don’t get caught up with HOW to express yourself, focus on WHAT you express.”
maybe some people who don’t understand this message can learn what it means in the long run, but in all likelihood what they have to SAY with their craft won’t be anything too profound if they needed their hand held to come to the realization in the first place… that was my point.
the quote is just reinforcing what most of us already know, so I wonder why it was even posted.
Ok then lets interpret the quote
It isnt “proof” that your out of ideas if you talk about technique, not at all. It may be true in some circumstances (possibly in many) but to make such a sweeping statement with the word “proof” in it, like its an undeniable fact is ridiculous.
We all get the intention of the quote. But the intention and the actual are not the same.
The only thing that Chandler actually proves is that his own assumption about people who talk about technique is flawed.
I just wonder how the hell a shitty quote like that becomes quoted through history.
Its not an abstract quote, theres no grey area or room for discussion. He claims its proof.
Leonardo Da Vinci - "i think ill use a different canvas for my next painting.
Raymond Chandler - “your talking about technique, your out of ideas”
Leonardo Da Vinci - “here i finished ive called it Mona Lisa”
Raymond Chandler - “ive been a dick havent I?”
Leonardo Da Vinci - “yes mate you have, im still brill, lets talk about different brush types”
I agree and Disagree!
You need technique to be able to do something like…play a flute!
ut have you seen the movie August Rush? This kid plays the guitar in a way that no one else does.
Flat on his lap.
Slapping it and poking it etc.
And he makes SOLID music.
Sure its a movie…but i have a clip of a guy doing EXACTLY the same in real life.
Therefore…original technique is not needed…but the guy still have to figure out HIS technique to working it.
I doubt if you hand a guy a guitar thats NEVER EVER touched one…he could play something that was decent off the cuff.
I belive in improvisation…but to a point. Then it gets ecclectic
karlos = 1 raymond chandler = 0
Hey guys. Thought Id come in here and humbug you for a minute.
There has always been technique in some form or fashion. For some, its the use of advanced technology (like some many of you are well adept at). For some, its whipping turntables down to the screws like Qbert, Jazzy Jeff, etc. And then you have guys like Francois Kevorkian, Cosmo, or David Mancuso; Djs that cant mix to save their own lives, but through their ability, can drop tunes at will, and have the crowd washed away in the moments.
Great topic. Im definitely interested in more of your thoughts on this
The brother of my girlfriend played with a grammophone at a retired people house and they loved it.I saw Billy Dalessandro with a NI Maschine, Mac and a Electribe live in a club.Incredible atmosphere.Look at Schulz und Söhne.Complete different approach. But they are rocking.
I´m driving a 50 year old Citroen and I´m using the latest shitty Sony mobile phone.Don´t want to travel with a horse carriage neither do cloud signs to communicate.Traktor and midicontrollers opened a complete new world for me.
Having the fun of my life.

[/quote]That’s… the best idea I’ve ever heard. I’m gonna do that too, spin some original vinyl on a phonograph at an elderly home ![]()
