Tensnake - Something About You [deep house / techno remix for beatport comp]
Hey everyone,
This is a remix we did for a competition on beatport. Added some dark synth sounds to samples from the original. Sits at 128bpm with a kind of dark techno / tech / deep house sound.
Would appreciate it if you checked it out and if you enjoy it, you can vote for it by spinning it.
Any feedback on the remix is also welcome, always trying to improve!
Fair enough, appreciate the honesty. Was looking for a third perspective, can’t see the forest for the trees type thing. Did find it hard to get some groove going on it. Yep, always next time
actually on that note, do you have any tips for how to get some life and groove out of ableton? Or at least what kind of an issue is it? Because I feel my drum programming isn’t too far off. Is it proper mastering? Better sound sources? I’m thinking a hardware synth (if I can borrow a friends) might add some life.
I know the ‘how do I make it groove’ borders on ‘what’s the secret’ in the sense the answer could be just time, effort and practice. But wondering if there is a particular issue I should focus on?
The track just doesn’t do anything. It sounds very amature as far as the composition and arrangement is concerned. Doesn’t sound polished off at all.
It has nothing to do with Ableton, mastering or having to use a hardware synth. All that stuff one can look pass. It just goes back to actually writing good music. You didn’t do anything creative at all it sounds like. It seems like you just came up with a rough groove and dropped in the samples can called it a day.
More than anything this sounds like a simple stripped down re-edit of the original, not a full blown remix that adds on to the original in any significant way.
And as far as groove, your drum programming is a bit off. It’s not funky, it doesn’t push or pull, it’s not laid back or anything. Just sounds like a very straight groove that doesn’t do anything.
Just my thoughts and input. All I can say is to keep at it and practice, Practice, PRACTICE!
Not sure if you’ve listened to the original (I assume you have) - I thought I had moved away from the original in terms of the instruments used, most of the synth sounds were not in the original. It appears it didn’t come through.
I agree the drum programming is pretty straight. I wanted to keep it pretty simple stylistically but perhaps need to put more elements in. I agree I probably need to look more at syncopation, have just had some trouble in the past with overcomplicating the drums / percussion. But yes, it is lacking a funky impulse. I need to work out how to, and then practice, translating that into Ableton, which is what I am having some trouble with.
And I appreciate your thoughts and input, criticism is valuable.
