Hi I am currently in the process of saving up for my first midi keyboard, I have done tons of research for the past week and decided wholeheartedly on the Novation Impulse, and either an APC 40 or a Maschine (huge debate here alsoslight_smile:
My only question remaining is how many keys do I get, 25 or 49? I will only be producing with it, I will be making bass heavy music: drumânâbass, moombahcore, glitch hip, breaks so no need to be able to play two sections of the song at once (melody and harmony, etc) Given this information will a 25 key suite my purposes or is ridiculous to think i can get away with writing full length sonic masterpieces filled with insane computer sounds and the occasional soul-lifting, mood-elevating riff to keep your emotions both interested and changing Thanks for your time everybody!!
49 if you like two hands when, 25 if you want to do more mouse programming. or 32 mini key from maudio with 1 knob(keys r small). And for maschine and apc40, i have maschine if you want like apc 40 control you have to find the right remote script. i have one for djing with maschine, but no studio template, but if im working with machine in the studio I just drag the audio to ableton. Its nice to have maschine and apc40 but i would go with apc 40 first if your a Live user, just because its a mixer, its a clip launcher and its cheaper, you can dj sans ableton custom script with apc40, but if you want a library of samples and a drum machine, get maschine cause there updating soon with some cool new features. Maschine is only really good in live performance in ableotn tho as vst (midi clock will be in sync). So if you have launchpad get Maschine, but if you want a clip launcher get the apc
i used to have a bunch of full size synths but still prefered to use a mini keyboard for programming bass lines and stuff. these days i only have the icon ikey (and nanokey) and do miss full size keys and an extra octave or two for programming pads. itâs doable tho.
If 25 key, get a really small keyboard, thatâs the beauty of 25 key keyboards. 49 is Ok, 61 for those who like to play electric piano and 88 for piano players. Or something like that. Iâm used to 61 key but thinking about getting one of those new Samson 49 Graphites when they are available (need to test play one first) as I like to save desk space in my studio just now.

Most melodies in EDM do not exceed the limit of two octaves which meens 25 keys would suffice technically. But to get creative and try out different octave ranges having a keyboard providing more keys will help you a lot!
So if you can afford it, I would definitely recommend the 49-keys version.
