So I can’t wrap my head around what the beatslicer actually does. I get that it samples a selection and intersplices it with whats playing in a particular pattern, but does anyone have anything else specific for it? I haven’t been able to find a particularly useful application for it yet, but I have a feeling its got a ton of potential.
I’ve been keeping the effect amount quite low and just using the dry/wet to control it in chained mode. psy sounds awesome with breaks lol. more experimentation required tho! fun fun. have been busy re-mapping the herc and the imix to accomodate the extra effects slots and its taking ages ffs lol
I find it a bit un-predictable, but thats probably because i need to practice with it some more.
Basically its kinda like the beatmasher - except instead of acting like a 4 bar loop that you can change the size of it cuts the audio into chunks (kinda like a slicer) then replays those chunks in different patterns.
I think practice is gonna be the key with this effect so you can better predict what the outcome is going to sound like - unless you like randomness, then just keep twisting the knob back and forth until your heart is content
If you want more control id recommend using like 2 or 3 beatmashers chained together:
1 to capture a 4 bar loop
the next to chop up the loop
and the third to recapture the chopped up loop
Or take it into advanced mode and have a play to see if thats better suited to what you want.
Or, for more predictability, just stick with the beatmasher.
It’s pretty good on lyrics too. If there’s like a 8 beat break in the song I like to sample that with the slicer and then whilst the other deck is playing along i go crazy with the slicer on advanced mode.
It works pretty well as long as you keep the gain under control, can get a bit clippy i’ve found.
Throws people off too, if they really know a song and are singing along then suddenly you start making totally new beats on the fly out of the lyrics they know so well. Exciting stuff.
i love it so far. i’m getting a similar pattern to the beatmasher in advanced mode, it’s just cut up faster and has more patterns due to both knobs changing it. i also love how when the GO button is on, it has tiny cuts in the audio as it is slicing it.. great for breakbeats and vocals for sure!
i’ve actually found that it normally works best with a vocal part, but can be perfectly fine with beats as well.
I use it to switch from a 4/4 beat track to dubstep. Styles 7&8 have a somewhat dubsteppish pattern and when you use it conjunction with the gater… It might work. The problem with this effect is that you can have so much fun with it without recognizing that it sounds shitty for everyone but the guy who’s going berserk on the knobs. As always: practice, record, listen, repeat.
Damn you Dvls I just programmed a superknob that does beatslicer, followed by beatmasher, and then tops it off with a delay, are you spying on me?
I love the beatslicer I wasted hours last night with Mrs Animus messing around with various vocals and breakdowns. I dont like it on beats so much, but Im going to keep messing around with it and see. I think I have a solid understanding of how it works.
Advanced mode is oodles of fun! Chained is great for its simplicity as well.
