The curse of playing live?

So I have this gig where I play in a posh/chic restaurant, good money and even better food. But The past two times I was there my laptop has just TURNED OFF on me while playing, and I’ve never had this happen before. It doesn’t jitter or anything before it happens, no warnings at all, just off. And when I go home to trouble shoot it and even play the same tracks it works fine, for hours on end.

Just the curse of playing at an actual gig I guess, phucking murphy’s law

had the same problem several times…found out my laptop was overheating because of to much heatsink paste…after i renewed the paste it worked perfect.

Yup could be an overheating problem

Could also be due to electric surges. I always use a surge protector with my equipment, just to be on the safe side. Quite cheap protection

Never had an over heating problem before so I don’t think that’s it. And why would it be play fine the rest of the night though? And there is a surge protector that I plug into, I was thinking that at first as well but nothing else turned off that was plugged into it.

If your computer works fine when you are at home, then the problem must be with the place where you play. Is it very hot in the restaurant? Get a program to monitor your cpu temp while you play.

It’s warmer in my apartment than it is in the restaurant, but I’ll look into getting an app to monitor the temp. Any decent ones for Macs?

really too late..
haha, thats the problem, opening a tab, don’t look at it for hours and than answering :stuck_out_tongue:

haha, I win?

by the way…what apple are u using? i heard of some powerbook series where they using too much heatsink paste.

guess so

PowerBook G4, 12 inch. Think that really might be the issue?

I could also be a bad battery and power supply, if m power supply even slightly comes out it shuts off. it really sucks. I totally feel your pain

but it really sounds like a heat issue, is your machine on a flat hard surface? even a tablecloth can cause it to overheat.

if your heat levels are fine
(I like this one for you PC users)

If youre heat levels are fine, you might check your RAM and HDD.

From your problem description I’d diag heat first, then HDD, then RAM.

I have that exact same issue, the battery is shot and doesn’t hold a charge at all, been like that for the better part of a year now.

Hey mate.

when you plug your power supply in are you using a 3 pin prong with ground or the 2 pin?

If you are using 2 pin, this could be the cause of the issue as there is no ground and can cause the laptop to just turnoff or freeze up with no apparent reason.

I was having this problem myself then i switched to the 3 prong plug, and haven’t had any problems since.

I’m using the three pronged one and still have this issue, but at home I’m only using the two pronged one.

If it is a temp-problem, try using a laptop stand, that may help already in solving it; getting air below the lappy should help a bit. Otherwise I really would go with a surge-protector. Had a very bad power-spike here last week coming through the power grid- suddenly all my equipment had gremlins (=acting up). Looked at a powermeter I use, frequencies went up to 60hz (normal is 50) and stuff. Really weird. So much for the german power-grid :-/

Ok, so I installed the Widget so I can monitor my temp, hard drive, fans and so on.

Should my fans really be at 0 rpms?
