the future of dj-ing

I DJd with the Happy Mondays once (well twice actually) and i played the tunes and Shaun and Bez just stood there dancing like loons and getting paid way more than me.
I know for a fact that Judge Jules has mimed to a mini-disk (few years back).
Happens all the time. Some of my bloody mates were hired to play a rich girls party in a Marquee and they mimed to one of my Mix CDs and they got paid good money. Cheeky twats even phoned me and told me what they were doing. Lazy gits.
I could see myself miming to a mix cd (not sombody elses, mind you. that is just skeezy) if I weren’t feeling well, or if something broke and I wanted to put on a ‘show’ regardless of whether or not I was actually mixing.
But getting paid to have someone mix for you? Goddamn that’s lazy.
hurtin
sorry i had to do this ![]()
hahahahaha oh man that gave me a good laugh with the peter hook one LOL
have you guys seen him playing his ehmmm so called sets on youtube xD
Cant you guys see the invisible midi controllers hes jamming out on ? ![]()
yap your right i don´t see it…maybe he´s using the invisible controller app on his iphone. dammit iphones ![]()
I hadn’t heard of this guy before. But omg I already hate him with a burning passion. I can’t even say how much this video makes me rage.
I’m going to smack my head into a door frame now.
I wish I could DJ with only two knobs D:
They must be SUPER knobs!
is that tocadisco earl-panda? are you sure?
Woah… Hold the phone a minute guys… ok he mimes, hes a shit DJ but a little research would reveal he was in New Order who made what is believed to be the Biggest Selling 12" Single of All Time - Blue Monday.
Not only that , he was the Bass player in Joy Division (Love Will Tear Us Apart), so thats 2 of the most influential bands of all time and 2 of the greatest records of all time.
He also bank rolled the Hacienda Club which was one of the most important and influential clubs in the world.
(cant believe people dont know all this)
So, yeah hes a tosspot miming DJ but hes hardly lost in history. Hes a part of Dance Music History.
Yes Karlos, that´s what makes it so ambivalent.
..nah its not Tocadisco it’s Jesus Luz…Madonnas boy ![]()
Sad to see him looking the fool in these videos. New Order and Joy Divsion were both massively influential bands in their day.
+1 to it being Madonna’s pet…I heard his set was HORRIBLE…guess you can’t blame him tho, seeing he didn’t actually mix. Who would actually pay to see/hear this fool? Should the venue be to blame here too? Maybe they think Madonna would show up?
hey
Yeah i’ve saw an even worse video of Hookie DJing before. The part that’s sad isn’t that he used to be in amazing, music changing bands, its BECAUSE of that and that now that he’s a “DJ” he twiddles knobs and poses and pretends to be doing stuff when he’s not.
With a famous person like him or someone of his ilk who has been involved in music for a long time, he has a unique viewpoint and insight into a particular time in music. I mean fuck HE WAS THERE at the Hacienda with New Order/Joy Division and along side the Mondays etc etc and Tony Wilson. God i even quite liked a couple of his ‘monaco’ tracks. So if I was to see him I would be there for his song selection, wanting to hear tracks that were his influences or that he liked or that somehow were part of him and his personality and his experiences.
If he just played them bang bang one after another with no mixing or technical DJ skills that’s kind what i’d expect, i’m not there to see a “DJ” as such I just wanna hear ‘his’ selection of music.
I’ve personally DJ’d with the guys from the Mighty Boosh (British comedians), the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, the View (a relatively famous British band) and a few other musicians and famous personalities who had turned their hand to a bit of DJing, and seen quite a few more, and that’s exactly what they did. (The FLC’s New York influenced set was awesome fun to listen to, totally wasted on the venue and crowd unfortunately but I had a blast!
)
But in his case he has obviously got someone to mix a load of CD’s for him and he stands there loaping about and pretending to be DJing, and in the video i’ve seen even the mid control he seems so fond of didn’t seem to be working he was just twiddling a pile of knobs that done absolutely fuck all.
Its sad that someone of his stature has been reduced to this.
LOL and I have also engineered for a band I work with on a festival stage that was headlined later that night by the “Happy Mondays”, and it was the same set up. A fairly crappy DJ (lol clearly not you Karlos) playing tunes while they jumped about out their faces and shouted crap down a mic. The festival was full of idiots who had came to see them and they had more trouble than in any other year, and to top it all off while they were on stage we caught some of their hangers on trying to steal an expensive custom yamaha drum kit of ours and pile of other shit and whisk it out the back of the tent. Me and some larger mates managed to convince them to put most of it back but they got away with a couple of bongo’s and some other percussion drums of various types and we could hear them banging away on them all through the campsite that night although could never actually locate them! ![]()
I agree with everything you said Kev.
I mean what do people expect from Guest DJs from bands.
Ive done my fair share of gigs with members of bands doing DJ spots.
(DJd for the View a few times myself).
The only “Star” that ive DJd with that could actually pick out some wicked music was Mani from the Stone Roses/Primal Scream . DJd with him a few times and hes great. I think he would be shocked at Hookies antics.
Hooky has got a new Hacienda compilation out and you can bet your life it wasnt him that solely chose the tracks.
Still … im fairly disapointed with this whole Peter Hook DJ stuff.
Heres a pic of my fave Stussy tee-shirt. Hes a hero to me but i feel a little less cool in this shirt now.
hahaha what in the fuck did i just watch !!! LOL… what a tosser!
