The ultimate vacation mobile set up

The ultimate vacation mobile set up

Hey guys so I was thinking of ideas for the ultimate vacation mobile dj set up. I can’t carry a normal controller with me, its way too big.

Traktor X1
Midifighter Classic
Audio 2
DJ2Go controller DJ 2 Go | Numark

What do you guys think? Ultimate mobile set up that is super light?

what do you mean by vacation mobile DJ?

Novation Nocturn

Icon iDJ

the nocturn is the best as it’s excellent build quality and versatile enough to map anything to it. The icon is much better than the dj2go, but i have heard bad reports of it’s jogwheels in traktor, and the deckadance mapping is terrible. I use both with VDJ Pro and they each work perfectly with full control of transport with controllerist style effects.

I’m going on a backpacking trip

You could always just go with a xone k2

I second this. Super compact, built-in soundcard. Lots of flexibility.

I still need something with Jog wheels though. X1 for cues and Midifighter for effects and stuff (Instant gratification)

+3 on the k2

It’s a sound card and a great controller with 3 layers of mapping and comes with a case inc,so can’t beat that

I just take an iPhone/iPod with the DJay app, DJ splitter cable and some headphones.

and one of these: http://www.retrocase.com/

Well if you already had your mind made up why did you ask for advice?

How confident are you in your mapping abilities? This would help in determining your needs.

Also, the number of USB inputs would be the dealbreaker for me.

K2 = one USB
DJ2GO (or similar), A2DJ, MF, X1 = 4 USBs

Which would you prefer?

Dam NI I was planing on a K2 but the came the F1 and K2 was not in stock so I ordered a F1 got it loved it so much I ordered one more now I want to go for the K2 but dam NI drop prices on Mashine so now I want that instead. But going on a backpack trip the K2 is a must. Instead of bringing thoses 4 units you mentioned you bring 1 and get all te same controlls and more but no jog.

Thats my issue with the K2 I want jogs

And I’m horrible with mapping :X

It may not seem like it, but this limits your flexibility quite a bit. Have you thought about familiarizing yourself with the controller editor?

i.e. if you knew how, you could map the encoders on the X1 with jog-wheel-like functionality for each deck…

Just a suggestion so that you’re not so limited by your gear…

Woah really? You can do that?

Yep! I assume you’re using Traktor? These are just midi controllers so any signal they send can be mapped to control some part of Traktor. If you check out the Controller Mappings section of the forum you will find out how much flexibility people can get out of their controllers, no matter how basic or how complex.

Jog wheels are just endless encoders, but they have a platter on the tip. On the X1, the 4 larger knobs are endless encoders that you can turn in either direction without stopping (just like a jog wheel). You’d be hard pressed to do any scratching with them, but to scrub through a track or nudge pitch they would work pretty well.

On the K2, the four knobs at the very top and the 2 at the very bottom are endless encoders so any of these could be your “jogs”. And you can even get fancy if you learn about modifiers (or “shift” functions). If you noticed, there is a 4x4 grid of buttons on the bottom which could likely mimic the functionality of the Midi Fighter (hello, Instant Grat mapping).

Somebody may have even done this mapping already, I don’t know. If not, maybe you can find somebody who can! Never hurts to ask!

Yeah really… figure out mapping. It’s pretty simple, and it is BY FAR the most important aspect of digital DJing.

Also, unless you do weird stuff like DJ non-quantized music and refuse to ableton warp, or maybe use a lot of pre-made transition tracks for some reason… Honestly I havent been able to come up with a reason for using encoders as jogwheels. Beatmatching would be pretty much pointless with encoders, so you’d have to be using it for scrubbing. Because it’s a tiny little encoder, you would have to have to map another control to vary it’s sensitivity, otherwise you’d either be turning that knob for an hour to get through, or wouldn’t have the resolution to get to a specific point. It’d be far easier to map two encoders to use the Beatjump feature, like on the S2/S4.

Assuming id have to use the faders as volume to crossfade

How did you expect to connect 4 controllers to work together then?..An X1 and sound card is adequate for most clubs where you have two separate channels to plug into. You may not have jog wheels, but you have pitch bend buttons.
