I recently picked a Xone 62, and this is my first time playing with a 4 band eq.
I have previously owned the 32, and 42.
What I am finding odd with the 62, is that the Mid 1 and Mid 2 don’t do a whole lot to effect the sound of a track. The low seems to bring a lot more into and out of the track than both of the Mids combined. Has anyone experienced this? Am i just tripping out a little bit? could there be something wrong with the mixer (it is a used unit, although I did take it in to have a master pot, mute button, and headphone jack worked on, and a general once over)?
I plugged in my Z1 to compare, and the single Mid seems to do a lot more than the combined Mid 1 and Mid 2 on the 62.
Maybe someone can shed some light on this issue for me.
320k MP3’s, which I have always used (DJM 600, Xone 32, 42, S2 and Z1)
Would it really sound different on the 62 versus anything else I’ve owned in the past? (not trying to be sarcastic if it comes across that way, just a legit curious question)
Not necessarily a huge difference but… Also those mid-range frequencies will show the effect on vocals and brass quite a bit but if you tend to play purely electronic music with no vocals you may not hear as much of a difference. Try playing various types of tracks and playing a bit with the two mids and you’ll hear their potential. I used to use a DJ mixer with parametric eq’s where you could sweep through their frequency range. they were quite subtle but great for accentuating or cutting a vocal or toning down a high hat.
Been years since I have used a 4-band a&oh but if I recall it wasn’t a huge difference but was very nice for really minute adjustments for when ya felt a track just didn’t sit right somewhere in the spectrum could really be more precise… This was on vinyl and cd my burned MP3 CDs either so maybe that’s why? Not sure
Xone 62 Mids do a lot, but low-mid and mid do have a ton of cross over, unlike the Xone:92 which has a much sharper separation between the mid and low.
If you’re used to Z-Iso on traktor, the 3 band isolating eq is going to be a completely different sound. The -26db cut on the 62 takes a bit of getting used to. When I still had my 62, it taught me to mix very carefully with EQs, using the filters in conjunction to shift sound around. It took me a few weeks to get used to my Xone:92 when I bought it, a really different approach for me.
