Acer has unveiled a new “concept device” that they think represents the future of laptopping. The Iconia has two 1366×768 capacitive touchscreens, one in the usual place and one where the keyboard would be. The idea being that it vastly increases the stuff that you can do. Of course, you can only look in one direction at once, and the bezels nix any ideas you might have of folding this thing into one big screen. The guts are respectable, but nothing crazy: Core i5, integrated graphics, 4GB of DDR3, a 2.5″ HDD, 3G, and a USB 3.0 port. That all could change, since this isn’t a final spec device.

They’ve got a few concept touch apps, including a journal and a scrapbook, and a social stream.

The “Acer Ring” and gesture editor demonstrate the power of a touchscreen, namely natural gestures like “grabbing” the screen or putting your palms on it, and I’m glad to see that being advanced. The trouble is, this thing runs Windows 7, and Windows 7 just isn’t that touch-friendly. Engadget notes that the keyboard is hard to use, which I would have expected. A real keyboard lets you rest your fingers on the home row, and the muscles we use to go to U, or R, or comma, are different when you’re hovering over something, trying hard not to touch anything.

Blah blah blah. . . To the real question, can it DJ!? :slight_smile:

edit* You get what you pay for. The Acer doesn’t have a official price yet, but I would guess around $1600. The Toshiba is around $1000.

In fact, research for the above post is how I came across DJTechTools.com - That’s wicked cool!!

The www.Kno.com was just released on a single 14" screen and dual 14" screen platform for the educational market. First of it’s kind. The single and dual screen adds capacitive touch, also it is my understanding a wacom screen, while the first of the two screens houses the cpu, graphics etc. I’m on the Advisory Panel over there and they have their sights firmly set on the educational market.

There is potential for this type of product at 14" each screen. This matches 90% of current textbooks with the ability to use 1 side for research and the other for writing, etc. That’s cool. Also, it’s a custom linux build and the initial impressions are good. The downside, it’s a custom linux build, so it means replacing the internals with, for example, two HP TM2’s to make this a dual touchscreen and a viable solutions. www.Hack-a-day.com could pull it off.

Way back in the day, I posted about the potential of the Wii controller as an interface and it’s capacity. This has grown and is very good to see. A new way to interface.

Also, what we are about to see from Microsoft’s Kinect is about to simply blow us away. I like smart people and have so much respect and so much to learn from them.

Long ago and in it’s infancy, I was helping those in initial foundation of what has been adapted as the Wii controller for Media Center. I’m still working on a plan for performance hardware for DJ’s that will integrate touchscreen and the Wii controller type integration. All a work in progress.

What I am waiting for, anticipating, is the full integration of touch control and VDJ + Traktor and a mobile platform like the iPad with Wii control functionality and accelerometers. Tight package, powerful and adaptable.
