Track markers in ONE mp3 without splitting? Possible?

Track markers in ONE mp3 without splitting? Possible?

Does anybody know if it’s possible to create one long mp3 (or some other file format) that allows the user to skip through to the next track or next portion of a mix? I’ve been recording mixes for a while now, but I was thinking it’d be cool for my fans if they could skip through sections of my mix (especially I it’s an hour long mix).

Essentially I want to be able to keep the whole mix as one file and have the track markers built-into it. I know it’s possible to split the mix up into various sections and then the ipod will play them in concession, but I’m looking to not have my listeners download a whole zip folder then have to have a playlist in iTunes so they can achieve this.

Am I crazy or does this exist?

After some more research I think this may be an answer.

To do this with already existing MP3s (that you’ve spliced) look here:

Definitely a bit more work, but also A LOT less work than making a cue sheet. I’ll let you know if it works when I try it out tonight after work.

cheers,

here you go http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2010/06/how-to-create-a-chapterized-audio-file/

this looks cool too. They call it audiobook maker, but you can use it with music too: http://audiobookmaker.sourceforge.net/

I don’t think you can index MP3’s :disappointed:

It only works with AAC and other formats.

Those ^ are all MAC applications. This is for Windows: Loden Software » Chapter and Verse

Definitely a good idea. I would need it to be MP3 or a well recognized format tho.

Soundcloud says they accept AAC files. I wonder if you could upload an indexed AAC file to Soundloud ?

Upping to SC isn’t my worries. It would be if I wanted to make a mix cd and give them out to people. I don’t the AAC is all that well recognized on cd players and the like.

Who knows tho.

AAC works with anything decent out there so I would not worry about any odd-ball old players. Use AAC.

THANKS SO MUCH all of you guys!!

Yea I will try to do it in AAC. Considering all iPods play AAC, and its pretty much a standard now for most players on smartphones, etc. I wouldn’t mind using it. I’m not too worried about uploading it online, since I use Mixcloud, which allows me to timestamp my mixes. I was more thinking of people who are listening to my mixes on the bus or while they’re working out, and who just wanted to skip a little ahead (because maybe they don’t like a particular song). I’ll let you guys know if it works!!

Once again thanks so much.

my point is that people who download your mix from soundcloud could have an indexed AAC file, instead of one long MP3 file. Like the OP said, then people can skip forward or backward (like a CD) from their iPhone/Android device.

I’m not sure MixCloud accepts AAC uploads. Anyway, it’s a no-brainer to also make an MP3 file, I’m using 320k files for Mixcloud, suspect they stream 128k but it does not hurt to always try to upload best quality.

BTW the new Fission 2 up at the Mac App store could do AAC indexing!

Hes talking about playing on an ipod or cd. Not uploading to mixcloud.

he’s talking about sharing his mixes with his friends. you do that with Soundcloud/Mixcloud.

I think he speaks of both . Soundcloud to download mixes (AAC is fine), Mixcloud to share mixes via Mixcloud (not 100% sure it accepts AAC.) But Mixcloud has its own UI to set the track info on the mix, anyway.

My point right here. Right arm bro!

I fail at explaining myself on these forums I swear.

Soundowl while were at it. Since they don’t reject DJ edits like Soundcloud.

Hey guys. Little update. I wasn’t able to use the original method posted by loverocket because mountain lion doesn’t support it. BUT I was able to purchase an app on the mac app store called “audiobook builder” for $5 and it does it beautifully well. it took me like 3 hours to figure out where the chapters were on itunes. So i thought it wasn’t working for the longest time. But nonetheless I now have my mix in one AAC file. and it’s under songs. When i play it on my iphone it plays normally without any gaps, but it allows me to skip to each song that I set up, as well it gives me the option to look at all the songs in my mix in order and allows me to select a section to go to (they’re all labeled with the track names). All in all i’m pretty pleased. Now let’s see if people will actually make use of it or not lol.
