Traktor Pro 2.6.8 and Kontrol S4mk2 totally betrayed me at a gig last!!! Nightmare!!!
Am very tired and pissed off so will write in bullet points!
Had to rent an S4mk2 for a gig as my new gear is still in transit.
Played the S4mk2 for 2 days at home before the gig, perfect!
Dude i was renting from was also playing before me, he connected the mk2 to his PC laptop, played just fine.
Switched USB cables and connected to my MBP (10.8.3, TP2.6.8)
Everything working and controlling, cue points, mixer, but upon play the phase meter would keep going crazy, sync would not come on, playing deck would not become master, deck B would not sync!
First opening DJ was brought on, i relaunched Traktor, same issue. Restarted MBP, same! Switched Mk2 on n off, same. reinstalled traktor…worked!!!
Everything syncing but massive noise in output, like a speaker cable gone bad!
*First opener back on stage!!!
Copied my main folders on second openers PC…20 mins!!!
*Second opener who had played a full set without any issues…now his PC kept saying S4mk2 Needs firmware update, may not function correctly!!
PLAYED THE WHOLE NIGHT ON FIRST OPENERS PIONEER XDJ WITH A USB STICK!!! The only fun was mixing with manual beat matching again! Scrolling through tracks on the screen of the XDJ----nightmare!
I have noticed this tracks not syncing or becoming Master once with me X1 as well…
Any idea what was the cause of this ?? I dont know where to begin!
What should i do ?
Sounds like a nightmare, These are the questions I would have asked myself afterwards why was I using TP2 2.6.8. Why didnt I have a cell phone with music loaded on it that you could have pluged into aux of mixer. Did I check the firmware version on the S4MK2 afterwards.
Lesson learnt Johnny!
So can someone identify why this happened ?
I am on 2.6.8 because its been stable with my Traktor Audio 10 and Xi’s. When i’m playing small gigs and i play on others S4’s or S4mk2’s its been plug and play, no issues whatsoever. This unit worked just fine, even at sound check. Then the dude plugged it into his PC and when i plugged into mine all hell broke lose. Also, when he was playing there were no firmware issues but when i plugged back into his, it asked for firmware upgrades…
Re-installing Traktor didn’t help either…
Where should i look to find the cause of this ?
Good point…interesting!
BTW, Johnny…DHL has confirmed my Xone DB4 has arrived! I have to clear customs first and will have it tomorrow. Really psyched and will post pics/videos!
That would be my guess. It is possible that there is something in the S4 firmware that was triggered by the computer swap. Upgrading the firmware on the S4 is a “long(er) term” solution.
Power cycling the S4 would have been my first step toward a solution. In the bullet summary, it is not “obvious” that the S4 was power cycled between connections to the different laptop platforms. I am not familiar with the S4, but removing all the plugs (including the wall wart) and giving it a “standing 10 count” should be more than sufficient as a hard reset.
I have swapped an S2 between different Windows computers running different versions of Traktor without any issues. I tested this path with my main and my backup laptops and had no issues moving the controller between computers.
Hi, new to the forums.
Taking this seriously when perhaps i shouldn’t, but do you not consider the s4mk2 “stage safe” ?
I’ve just made the switch to Traktor & S4Mk2 after 15 years on vinyl then serato with timecoded vinyls in recent years. Was planning to take the s4 out to a gig in april rather than use the clubs cdj’s which look knackered.
The original posters situation sounds horrific, and i wont get the same 2nd or 3rd chance on the night…
Use the S4. This was a rented S4 that could have anything go wrong with it. Hardware does fail. That’s life. Just make sure you have a backup that you can DJ from if things go south on you.
