I know this subject comes up a lot but I still have some questions. What is an acceptable latency for my S4? How much does latency change affect CPU usage? The only way I see how to change it is the slider in audio setup. See attached pic for my current settings on my first generation macbook air with Traktor S4 (I think the default value was one increment less).
This leads me to my next question, I have both S4 and TP2 installed but TP2 seems to be quite a bit more CPU hungry and does’t feel as stable as S4 (it heats up my computer faster and gets laggy). Is there anything I can do to change this or should I just stick with S4.
Thanks in advance for advice, its much appreciated!
Sam
Your latency is in the “sweet” range so you shouldn’t worry about it too much.
T2 is more CPU intensive due to the new higher res waveforms but 2.0.2 reduces this (did you update?)
I can run min latency (7.3ms) on a late 09 13"mpb with 2 decks (keylock on), 8 samples playing and 6 chained fx on (stress test) and it does go a bit into the red when i hotcue or scratch hardly but, no audio glitches. increasing the latency to (10.2ms) gives a CPU meter peaking at no more than 60%, both with WIFI on. BTW, I’m using 2.0.2, had 14ms turning WIFI off with TPS4.
If your Air gets hot try raising it a bit to ensure correct airflow, perfect solution would be a stand (and clean the cooler if you never did ).
I appreciate the response! My air can definitely “breath” fine; it is on a stand that doesn’t prevent any airflow. I am updating to 2.0.2 now, we’ll see how it is! Thanks! One thing to note is I can run quite an intensive setup like you described without the CPU meter skyrocketing but a hot club environment lags it up very fast.
I’m playing on it now and doing everything I can to work it hard so we’ll see. The TP2 waveforms take some getting used to, I think I like the spectrum waveform the best.
I do wish there was a fast way to analyze all my tracks at once. That seems to be the most CPU intensive process so it would be nice to have them all done.
Thanks, Yep, I have had it going for a while and plan to leave it overnight. Appreciate it!
ps: If it only gets partially done, next time I start traktor and analyze collection, it won’t re-analyze the already completed tracks correct? It will only do the tracks that haven’t been analyzed yet?
You’ll be able to tell which ones are analyzed and which ones arent. The analyzed will have a BPM and the non analyzed won’t. I also wouldn’t recommend quitting Traktor while analyzing tracks. I force quit Traktor Pro about a year ago while it was analyzing and somehow managed to corrupt my entire collection. I had to delete it all, reimport roughly 2k songs from iTunes and reanalyze them all. It took about 15 hours. No Fun.
Upon opening again right click on Track Collection and Check Consistency, then press analize in the report window, otherwise it will reanalize the whole thing.
Yep, didn’t you try loading a collection backup file? or it crashed when you were importing for the first time?
I had absolutely no clue that there were such things as collection backup files until I upgraded to the S4. Had I known that there were backup files earlier, it would have made my life a lot easier, having shifted my collection around, changing hard drives and having previous collections save to the wrong location, the list goes on.
i haven’t noticed massive differencies in cpu usage between s4 and tp2.
honestly the real jump i’ve noticed was from tp1 and tps4… just a HUGE increase of load for the cpu.
but nothing that would affect my latency so much…
Alright the whole library is analyzed! When I am browsing in track collection everything shows up as analyzed with the proper bpm. When I browse one of my iTunes playlists however; the bpm is either not displayed or is incorrect, and when I have the “analyzed” column visable, it says “no” for all of the tracks. This is a problem for me because I use iTunes playlists to sort, browse, and select tracks and I need the analyzed, or correct bpm to be displayed there.
