Transfering Macbook

Transfering Macbook

I currently have a 13" macbook pro and i was looking to get an imac for my studio setup but im just going to buy a 17" macbook pro and get an external monitor…

NOW..

whats the most efficient way to transfer all my stuff from my 13" to 17"

time machine backup on a FW disc

FW disc = ?

firewire

with firewire it’s just way faster.. an usb disc will do the trick too..

how about my traktor, maschine licenses how would i got about removing the licenses & uninstalling the programs safely so i can reinstall one the 17" i dont want to use up an extra install

Method 1.

  1. Get a Firewire 800 cable
  2. Plug Firewire cable each end into both machines.
3.Boot New 17 laptop into “target disk mode” by holding down the “T” key on bootup.
  3. Download Carbon Copy Cloner on the 13’
  4. Run Carbon Copy Cloner and Choose the “firewire” disk as the taget drive.
  5. When Finished reboot 17’ - all done

Method 2.
Carbon Clone onto a USB drive. When its done, boot the 17’ from USB (Alt key) run Carbon Copy clone again - this time onto the onto the internal disk.

Either method will keep your system EXCATLY the same licences and all, I’ve had issues with time machine & migration assistant screwing up licenses before (Adobe).

Some peeps swear by super duper instead of CCC, personally I found it slower and it crashed a few times so …

^this, I totally forgot about “target disc mode”

I’d use Carbon Clone, that’s what I did when I got my new MacBook Pro as well. Worked perfectly fine.

+1 for CCC. Made installing the new HDD in my MBP really straightforward

I used time machine for my SSD swap and it worked like a charm.

put the 13" in target mode and use migration assistant on the 17". Done & done.

please sent $20 via paypal.

if you dont want to deal with it I think the apple store will do it for like $60 and you can just drop it off, or if you have apple care it might be free

Works well, but doesn’t work for every application.
