I was doing my morning routine of checking numerous blogs (5-6) to check up whats new in the tech, auto and music world when I came across this little creature. Looks like they took a Mixtrack, made a custom case and added a guitar look-a-like neck to it.
“The not-so-cleverly-named turntabletar is something that should never be used IRL. Still, there’s no denying its novelty. Two midi turntable controllers have been melded with a mixer and strapped to something resembling a guitar neck. But instead of fret bars and strings, the neck has a crossfader, which, of course, is a DJ’s best friend. Theoretically, any DJ-esque MIDI app”
The neck is a really silly place to put the crossfader if you actually want to use it rapidly (as for scratching or superfader effects work). I was designing something like this with a midifighter and crossfader in a guitar body (one of my projects that never really got off the ground), but my plan was to have the crossfader on the body of the guitar so you could work it with your strumming hand. Putting it on the neck just seems awkward.
In addition, this thing is kinda ugly and unwieldy. And not very intuitive to use. Much cooler if it just had one jogwheel and an A-B-C-D switch to change the deck you control with it. Or forget the jogwheel altogether; it’s not really clear it would be that useful used in this fashion anyway.
was a fun project.. looking to build flash site to offer customizability in near future. only way to make it make sense, right? will be built on custom board too, not just a hacked controller..
oh no worries, mate.. still not quite there in terms of being a comfortable tool but as a test of concept it seems like something that could actually be usable.
i’d say i agree though..this particular set up wouldn’t be good for the scratch djs–with the crossfader on the neck.. still not sure the best way to adapt it for scratching.
i think moving forward, with the option of customizing the thing, we’ll be able to start to narrow down the shape/feel/layout to ultimately construct some version of the iiideallllll djtar. which, like it’s cousin the keytar..is still kind of always going to be a gimmick of sorts right?
Id say so in my opinion but everyones different dude. I think theres deffo a market for a djtar, keytars are gimmicky but they still caught on. For heavens sake people DJ with wiimotes, I dont think you can get more gimmicky than that. Its just down to personal preference m8.
