Unimpressed…
Went to the avalon last night and saw zedd and le castlevania…
I was unimpressed with their sound…It sounded like one big ass record after another…too many big ass hands in the air breakdowns…not enough driving the crowd and whipping them into a frenzy…
A good example of guys that producers first…being djs a distant second…
Yeah mate, I see this all too often.
The thing is, people don’t go to see dj’s anymore, they go to see producers. Big names bring the heads in.
Producers spend all day making tracks, not learning how to blend, and rightly so.
It is a sad state of affairs when the local dj opening the night is better than the headliner, but that’s life.
I like Le Castlevania, but the last time I saw him play at SXSW, there were people moshing in the crowd. I was just like, “the… fuck?”
He’s a mate of Skrillex’s right? Same old same old.
thats what i’m told…
this makes me excited to see Digweed at the Mayan on a weds in two weeks…people may not like him…but he is a true master of his craft…
who the F… doesn’t like him?! lol
yeah this whole producer/dj thing has always been a problem.. unless you’re Richie Hawtin
but yeah few producers can put on great shows as djs bc their time is spent elsewhere.
Agreed… Saw Zedd and Porter Robinson play the opening 2 (of 10) hours one of the nights of EDC and it was banger after banger. Not exactly the best way to warm up, but they’re obviously gonna play their own tracks and they only make bangers. Was fun, anyways.
On the other hand I’ve seen guys like Laidback Luke who are amazing in the studio and let their creativity shine even more on the decks.
avalon blows … i have seen some good acts at vanguard, but most of the legit acts ive seen were underground or legit intimate lounges and whatnot.
Lawler at the vanguard was legendary…digweed at the mayan is always solid…doc is good where ever…
I believe that A-Trak can pull the Producer/DJ role very well! I think its because he DJs more than he produces, but just about everything me makes is a hit!
we’ve booked one of those djs around 3 times. we’ve also heard the same set with the same transition three times…guess who? lol
as much as people hate the mousey one, hes a producer that puts thought into his live elements, because hes a producer and not a dj he decided to do things differently and for that I have respect for the guy despite him being an egotisticle prick…
im not a deadmouse hater…just isnt my sound…
haha this thread makes us producers feel good about their shitty dj skills, knowing we are not alone
there are a few good dj’s and producers out there that make the tracks just right and dj just right. i know half my music has a big ass sound to it while the other half has more of in the moment sound.
few really good ones i can think of would be Armin van Buuren and Paul Van Dyk
