this isnt good..every dj/producer DEFINITELY has to check this out..basically the gov. is trying to censor the whole US internet..this will ruin everything you love and use to market yourself
Oh fuck anonymous is going to have field day with this
On a more serious note it’s always good to keep in mind that there are always 2 sides to every story. I won’t get political on this but I will say that you need to realize that the people that made this video had a goal in mind and that goal is to get you on their side. This could very well be true but if life has taught me anything it’s that people tend to exaggerate when they want your support.
Never believe in something just because someone made a video that scared you.
Always do your own research and then you can decide whether or not you should shit your pants.
This is worth looking into.
Sometimes it’s good to play the skeptic
This is absolutely 100% true, there will be major consequences if this passes.
Sites like djtechtools can be shut down completely without investigation if a user posts a link to an unauthorized track or mix. It would remove the safe harbor given to sites tthat host user content that the DMCA offered. That and it would royally screw up a lot of other things and open the door to some serious consequences.
Call me a skeptic but there still hasn’t been any real evidence posted saying this is 100% true. I’m aware of what could happen if it is legit but nothing here or on the link has given me reason to believe this is real other than fear. I’m currently looking for a posted copy of the actual bill.
Certainly worth researching what this act really is about.
I love that people have an avenue to express themselves freely on the net.
I was working in Egypt when my friends showed me what was happening on their facebook pages. Later, all of them, suddenly found that their services were cut from accessing facebook. One friend had his phone die on him, and when he went to a kiosk to try and charge his phone, they told him that the police were close by and they banned the vendor from charging any phone or selling phone cards. We looked around and there were 4…in riot gear. It took us a while to figure out what was really happening, until we started talking to more people in the street.
[quote]Today, the US House Judiciary Committee has a hearing on the Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA. The text of the bill is here. This bill would strengthen copyright holders’ means to go after allegedly infringing sites at detrimental cost to the freedom and integrity of the Internet. As a result, we are joining forces with organizations such as the EFF, Mozilla, Wikimedia, and the FSF for American Censorship Day.
Part of this act would undermine the safe harbor provisions of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act which would make sites like reddit and YouTube liable for hosting user content that may be infringing. This act would also force search engines, DNS providers, and payment processors to cease all activities with allegedly infringing sites, in effect, walling off users from them.
This bill sets a chilling precedent that endangers everyone’s right to freely express themselves and the future of the Internet. If you would like to voice your opinion to those in Washington, please consider writing your representative and the sponsors of this bill:

Any form of censorship should be fought tooth and nail. A similar thing was attempted in Australia (it was purely focussed on an “internet blacklist”), and put to bed. It was enormously unpopular. It then emerged that some of our largest telco providers were to “voluntarily” filter a blacklist supplied by the Australian government. The list was leaked, and they found gay & straight porn sites blacklisted, a dentists website, even a dog kennel operator.
I sincerely hope the american people aren’t subjected to the same kind of nonsense!
you really think a government is gonna censor the internet?
they can try and pass any bill they want but its not gonna effect what people do and how we use the internet, technology is amazing and there will be will’s and ways.
if you are referring to the use of vpn’s etc, well.. I’m not sure if you’ve used one, but it certainly falls into my category of “affecting what I do and how I use the internet”.
besides, this bill is talking about actually physically shutting down websites, amongst other things, and not just within america, but around the world. I don’t know of any technology available that will get you onto a website that’s been shut down.
Devils Advocate: (and please read carefully, read the nuance of the statement before having a pop)
The OP calls this thread “Urgent: To all Music Lovers”
How is it urgent to ‘music lovers’ per se. Does that not suggest you mean ‘Urgent to all music lovers that use copyrighted music illegally’..?
Thread should be called “Urgent: To anybody that uses the interent” just to take the ambiguous sense that all you are only bothered about is the prevention of media piracy.
Looks pretty grim though to me. Interesting and i have posted it on my Facebook. To get some peer comments.
I also note, the commentator mentions that other countries may use the law to even worse consequences. Mmmm, not so sure about that.
I’m personally offended by that comment. I take my job as a photojournalist very seriously and for you to tell me that I’m in any way in bed with the government and that they control what I put in the paper is ignorant on your part.
Makes a lot of sense, I think. China is very soon gonna be the most important economic power around - so might as well start to adopt their methods now to get a head-start before the rest does
It doesn’t matter how you get your music, it will royally screw everything up for people who purchase their music. Anyone could go out and claim there is an unauthorized sample in a track and have beatport held responsible. You can forget about soundcloud, mixcloud, youtube, djtechtools, blogs, forums, and hosting site, pretty much they would have the power to shut down anything where music gets posted with no due process. So it affects music lovers and anyone in general.
