Vinyl CDJs Controllers

Vinyl CDJs Controllers

yup, another one of these, but i just couldnt find my answer because the threads ive seen:
-didnt have the same question as i do
-ended up as a ‘fuck you non vynil snobs’ thread
-ended up as a ‘fuck you controller cunts’ thread

so my question is: why do people stick on CDs? (not that it’s bad, but cuz i really just do not know why)

I’m not even talking about CD"J"s, just compact disks, cd-r, however you might call it.

i personally use a cheap controller, cuz i’m a too poor, and don’t play “real gigs” cuz im (hopefully) just not lucky enough to get em(but probably because im not good enough :stuck_out_tongue: ). i do work in a dj store, so i do know about the products and specs.

these days, i mostly see people using usb sticks on cdjs, just controllers, or(less often but still) 1300s

from my point of view, pioneer mixer+cjd+usb sticks are like glorified all-in-one controllers with built in lcd screens.
i get the point about vynil djing(even if i am unable to do that), and all the arguments about real scratching, authenticity, history, sound quality(not better according to some people, but at least different) and all that etc

so, this is not a real question anyway, but im just willing to see a discussion, not a dissing thread, about:

ARE CDs ANY GOOD NOWADAYS?

In my opinion and at least in my part of the woods (small poor eu country) the majority of DJ who still use CD’s are:

  • old school DJ that have a massive collection of ORIGINAL CD’s - for them it’s just not worth it ripping every CD and tagging everything just to be able to carry it on a USB stick. Also, not all clubs have CDJ’s with usb.
  • beginners that want to learn to manually beatmatch so they buy second hand CDJ1000mk3 thinking they bought a club standard. Then they get annoyed burning CD’s and within a year they try to sell them or end up using timecode.

With CD’s, you don’t have to rely on the club to have a CDJ-850, 900 or 2000 - any cd player will do. The worst thing that can happen regarding format is that the player cannot read the CD or the track starts skipping.

But still, for me - CD’s are outdated. I would not buy a CDJ without a USB and link function in this day and age.

I had DJ Luck & MC Neat guest at a club I was resident at in '09. They used CDs.
More recently, as in the last 5 months, I’ve played several raves where a number of both unknown and established guys on that particular circuit have all used CDs. Most clubs rocks CDJs of one description or another, so if you’re guesting then CDs are arguably the one medium that’s actually guaranteed to work wherever you end up playing.
