Want a Mentee?

Want a Mentee?

Hey everyone,

Please tell me if this is inappropriate for the forum and I will take it down. One of my goals is to not be an annoying 13 year old. (I’m 17:stuck_out_tongue:)

Is anyone willing to mentor me, I have been reading the forums but it would be nice to have someone to talk to. I am in the Boston Area and willing to travel to help out a gigs. If its possible to mentor over the web that’s cool to.

I don’t want to seem lazy. I want to put in time

where in the boston area are you located?

you have 50,000 mentors at your finger tips on this forum…

what equipment do you have?
what kind of music do you like to play?
practice practice practice
youtube techniques and tips

welcome to DJTT

Depending on your taste in music and your goals I might be interested in helping out (via web)

What keithace is saying is mostly correct, but having someone that you know you can go to directly is helpful

Same age, no-where near each other. Honestly, your best shot is practice, uploading mixes for critique in the mix section, and starting threads with questions (after doing a quick search to make sure you aren’t asking a common question). Welcome to the forum, the only thing you can do to piss the mods off seems to be spamming, putting code/big-images in your signature, and posting extremely vulgar/rude/pornographic content.

I’ve been looking around for mentors locally, what is it about dj’s that they’re so protective about any tips… or even advice? :disappointed:

I think it’s because just about every DJ does it differently.

I tried to ask one of the local ones for some startup advice and he told me that unless I knew someone I should just quit…

what a crappy thing to say to someone…

FTB…

I would suppose that its falls into job security (for lack of better terms) and/or style and equipment. The way I look at it, the reason why the “big” names are big is because of their “sound” and “style”. Look (listen) to guys like James Zibiela, Roger Sanchez, Laidback luke, etc. They all mix differently and have their own way of making these sounds/beats/tracks to be a signature. Just like you can tell when you’re listening to a R3hab or Benny Bennasi remix of a song.

Imagine that your favorite DJ trained you in everything he possibly knows, what would separate you from him? nothing. Style/creativity is your own thing, not something that can be taught. For everything else that can be, you have DJTT and interwebz .

The best tips and advice I have ever received about DJing was from this forum and thats to… Practice, practice, and practice. The more you learn about how music/mixing works and the more you practice, the more it will make sense. The more it makes sense the more your style will develop.

This is just my opinion and something that I have recently realized myself so take it as you will.

I can’t thank your post yet DarioJ, but thanks man. I need to just get a controller and start practicing.

I am in the North Shore

[quote]what equipment do you have?

I have an S4 and two PAs I have gotten from playing in my band throughout the years

I love electronic music but i just got into it, I’m not very familiar with the different names but I listen to Daft Punk, Deadmau5, The Glitch Mob, Xaphoon Jones, Pretty Lights, Girl Talk and Super Mash Bros

Yes im defiantly about the practicing, I’m also going to stay very connected to the community because along with great ideas its a place that supports new DJ’s

im in franklin (exit 16 on 495) and do gigs around here pretty regularly.

join the FB chatroom.. that should help you a bunch with random questions.

feel free to hit me up too if you need anything

only advice would be dont use itunes anymore, and mix your music while you listen to it… thats how i learned how to do everything i know (plus hours of watching mixes on youtube and emulating different techniques)

i am also 100% down for a boston DJTT meetup or even if we could finagle starting a night somewhere…

Also I am a seasoned tech so if you ever need a spare hand just message me

  1. find the records you think should be mixed together
  2. buy them in which ever format suits you and your immediate skills
  3. try to mix them together (refine your search and purchasing accordingly)
  4. learn to use FX if you want to get stupid with it
  5. mix those records together
  6. repeat until the needle hits the paper

the FB chatroom is a great suggestion, theres a few of us that are regulars. im on everyday almost all the time and would help if i could.

i think thats the link to it

That, was a very good start.

I’d be happy to help if there’s anyway I can.

I sent a request for the facebook group, it’s this kind of friendliness that I want to be a part of. Hopefully someday I can pass it along.
