Well I did it - My first DJ Gig

Well I did it - My first DJ Gig

I think it went pretty good considering that I had to set up the mixer, speakers etc. Got there early to set up (you cant depend on teens) I thought they would be late and they were. Got the music going, I didnt have enough buffer between me and the crowd and of course the obvious happens someone got to close to the mixers ac cord and it got pulled. It was a quick fix to figure out what was wrong so back to playing music. I had a crate ready to use but Traktor lost it somehow so I played straight from my track collection. I found it really hard to read the group as I played Bachata, Top 40 and some other stuff. I got them dancing no doubt but all I kept getting requests for was Bachata and personally I think its ok but not the only genre of music I have. So that was that in a nutshell I call last night a success. On a sidenote the adults kept coming to me an saying good job so I’m happy.

nice man, glad to hear! pop that cherry!

Umm what’s bachata?

Nice, grats!

It’s like Mexican salsa music

Thanks guys, Z Bachata is a style of romantic music originating in the Dominican Republic

That yung google

I never played it but had idiots ask me to play it at extremely inappropriate times. I thought it was like a dancey kind of vibe. Never cared to confirm.

Leave it to people to not be getting the vibe…and ask you to play some crazy completely unrelated style. lol never fails

This one bar I would play it was really bad. Got a good crowd and I would play my usual shit and everyone would be feeling it and like peak hour when the floor was full some drunk loser would get mad when I would refuse to play Garth Brooks. Not like I even have that bullshit in my collection, but still. Get a clue.

lol I remember my first bar I ever played at, older crowd, playing some disco hits and mixing a few new ones in there, keeping it jumpin. and the owners son would constantly come up and be like “dude you gotta play some three six mafia”. Dude are you kidding me??! not the place or the time! But then he would complain to his dad, and he would force me to play it, and big surprise…Floor…gone. It went on like this week after week.

You know what goes well with disco for oldies? SLIPKNOT!!! PLAY IT!!!

Excellent.

Now, to help “pay it forward”…based on what you know now…what advice would you give to someone else who is planning their first gig?

What advice did you get that was helpful?
What advice did you get that was not helpful?
What would you have spent more time doing before hand?
What did you not do that you would do the next time?
Anything else to share?

Get to the venue early.
No one told me I should have security (even for a high school dance).
I wish I would have had a crate of music instead of going through my collection.
I would have spent more time on create collection
I would have done a more through tech walkthrough
Dont let em see you sweat.

You forgot to mention two very important things

Jesus pose is key
Flanger use will get the party started

All great advice for someone to have.

Can you expand a bit on this?

Sorry for O/T, but…

Funny you mention slipknot, I did a wedding a few weeks ago with the most random playlist ever, literally was skipping all over the place from disco classics to slipknot/metallica etc. to 80’s cheese to disney sing along songs to current pop. When I first saw the playlist I thought ‘what the hell have I let myself in for’ but it was actually a really good night!

Should play Cabaret in small town Saskatchewan the random stuff I end up playing and people really bumping too amazes me… I usually sneak in a nirvana track as I’m going through early 90s stuff… Mobile gigs give you thick skin an really open your eyes to some god awful stuff and som really nice stuff also…,

I did google that genre and looks like could be fun to mix but I could never do it either for personal or for a mobile gig live in wrong part of North America and I don’t like mixing stuff I don’t know what their saying… My Spanish comprehension is terrible at best since I moved out of southern U.S.

Some pics from the gig.

Still lovin’ those chroma caps on your 4trak. Need to get some more for mine.

Thanks.
