Hey guys, I used to play in Traktor Pro 2 with an akai APC 20 and a Kontrol X1. I’ve started getting into the club scene and figured if I wanna be a good DJ I need gear to play on. So the dad bank opened up and he lent me a fair bit of cash (inb4 spoilt kid, cause I already know it) and I bought 2 CDJ 900’s and a DJM 350. since I’ve been playing on my new decks I’ve found that my mixes are much more musical because I have to pay attention to the music. anyone else found this to be true?
I know the feeling. Started out with a NS7, ended up syncing it all and not giving a shit about transitions, totally losing the passion. Bought a set of turntables, started playing vinyl, and the love is back completely and more than ever. Even though I still fuck up many transitions, you’re just into it so much more than when using a digital setup. Much more harmony in your music and mixes.
I totally did the same thing. Except with an S4. I felt that it was too easy to sync. Sadly, I didn’t know anyone else that could teach me… so I thought this was correct. I switched over to 1200M3Ds, and bam! My interested peaked and I began mixing again. Beatmatching, scratching, and transitioning became huge for me soon after. Now I’m experimenting with different ways to mix and moved onto CDJ 900s and my trusty DJM 800. Never will I go back to a DVS or laptop again.
I actually started out on Traktor with a piece of **** Behringer BCD3000 and soon moved to cdj800mk2’s with a crappy numark mixer. After about a year I sold it to buy an S4 and i kept that for a year but my god was it boring to mix with it. I have just bought a DJM700 and I’m now looking for some CDJ’s to get back into mixing with CD’s and it feels great
i’ve also been back&forth on the controller/cdj route.
now im using s2+midifighter. its a neat combo for what space it takes. and thats why i sold my cdjs and djm 800 but now im thinking bout getting cdjs again cuz i actually have alot of music on cds and the same reason as you guys mentioned above, losing my passion when im infront of the macbook driving me to not mixing so often anymore.
Use both? I love using time code vinyl (could use CDJ’s) and an X1 you get the traditional mixing feel with the ability to get crazy with effects samples and cue points if you want. It’s fun trying to pull off a Richie Hawtin minimal set when you get sick of spinning old school and the other way around
Sorry about the late reply guys! I played back to back in my towns second biggest club on CDJ 2000’s and a DJM 800, He was running rekordbox from his laptop and I had my USB stick with me (gotta keep it on yah at all times) and So he said “we should play back to back track by track” and I jumped at the chance, He play a tune and I’d mix into it and back and forth like that. It was the best night I’ve ever had I played from about 10:00pm till 4:00am and just didn’t want to stop. We eventually mixed into dubstep for a bit and holy crap that was trickier than electro (I’ve never mixed dubstep on CDJ’s before) managed to pull it off but could have been better. then we went into DnB and I nearly messed up soooooo bad, I had 15 seconds left on track b and I hadn’t even started mixing in track a, I quickly scrubbed to the usual 1:00 minute drop out and just saved the music (the floor went a bit dead though cause I sorta stuffed it pretty well). It was sooo fun, I was dancing like a moron, getting a fair bit of attention from the girls up on the stripper poles and every bloke was buying me drinks (I hope I don’t look too gay ) but holy crap just letting the music play and enjoying it is fantastic instead of beatmashing the hell out of a track. Since then the managers have told me I can’t be in the booth because I’m not employed there, I was gutted when I found out, I nearly had tears in my eyes. I’ll figure out a way to play there again because I know I want it more than anything and put the time into production and DJing to not reach my goal. but yeah I gotta say I do love playing on a basic setup of 2 CDJ’s and a mixer
