What Dj’s Have Influenced Your Setup?

I have noticed that whenever we see a dj live or see some youtube video. We all run out and buy that gear thinking that we will get that sound.

Let me be clear, I am not trying to be a dick, because I have done the same thing, but its good to laugh at ourselves sometimes.

So what video did YOU see that prompted you to change your setup??:smiley:

############################################

First I wanted to be a scratcher after seeing this video.
so I bought some 1200’s and a DJM-T1

#############################################

Then i wanted to be a controllerist after seeing this video and some others
So I bought a midifighter and a Traktor F1 and a Maschine

#############################################

Then i wanted to be all “MODULAR”… after seeing this video
So i bought a bunch of Denon SC2000’s and a Korg Zero 8 mixer

#############################################

And now it comes back around to 4 Cdj’s and a Xone 42 after seeing Mark Farina live, I knew I had to heve em’

How many setups have you been through??:thinking::thinking:

I saw Todd Terje about a year and half ago playing a disco house set on 4 CDJs. I had just gotten into DJing and had picked up a mixtrack pro. I thought, “yeah, I’ve got it all wrong.”

lol

Dubfire and Richie Hawtin, they’re the ones that I’ve looked at for so many years, and have really influenced my setup!

Traktor 4 Decks - 2 Kontrol X1’s - Maschine - Ableton - A&H Xone 92.

Nicole Moudaber. I pretty much use the exact same setup except a different mixer than she. I had this setup along a pair of 1200’s, however I needed money for school so I sold the 1200’s and figured I would use a “modular” setup until I could buy back the 1200’s. However I have really grown to enjoy 2 x X1’s and a mixer, and seeing some big name touring DJ’s using this setup or similar has made me realize this is all i really need to perform.

Well, no one forced me into the BCR2000 tbh, but long conversations with BentoSan and Micheal Mitchell got me into my MIDIfighter Classic. (In addition to the BCR2000 and Audio4DJ)

After a while, the Dubfire video was surfacing, teasing the Kontrol S4:

Closely followed by the performance video of DJ Shiftee:

With the MIDIfighter Spectra videos surfacing, I was pleasantly surprised. Also with Richie Hawtin picking up on an all white version:

But now with Ean and Michael Mitchell showing the MIDIfighter Twister… Oof! All I can say is JAWOHL!

interesting

I go through trying stuff out whenever the mood takes me, but i have the most fun with a few simple effects, my two 1210’s and my Z2.

I would like to have ean’s, richie hawtin’s and felix the housecat’s set up but I keep buying different gears. all i need is another x1 and a 4 channel mixer, but I have serious buying issues.

Qbert made me want to scratch. So i picked up some decks, taught myself a bit, and then signed up for QSU. Ended up getting a message back from Q on my transforms, and he said I was pretty far along for being new. Then I got a video response from him about where to take my scratching. As for DJing, it was all 90s UK jungle that made me want to mix.

Photojojo with his 2 x X1’s & DNX1600 Mixer

It was at first Craze,Tony Friend from Modestep and weirdly the DJ from Project X (So sue me) with a DVS system then; when my T.62s died I went onto a kinda Madeon-esque all Digital with a Maschine, X-Sessions Pro with some extra controllers.
Now after hearing SkisMs 3 decks layer mixes I decided to finally commit to three CDJ 900s.

Great thread.

For me, it was from my favorite producer/DJs like ill.gates and Bassnectar. That is why I went with Live for a performance platform. Seeing those guys improvise so much and create something so origional every time they played really sparked my interest since I came into the game wanting to learn how to both produce and perform.

the other problem is im a big nerd to begin with. I know a lot of people just keep buying new gear because they think it will make them better, I keep buying it because I love geek’n out on new toys. So ill get something, play around with it for a few months and if im not completly satisfied with how it impliments, I move on to the next thing.

my last big inspiration was definatly Mad Zach. I didnt know about the world of finger drumming until I came to DJTT and that has definatly been a fun hobby. The midi fighters have been hours of fun for not only myself but my 6 year old son as well.

I can honestly say that I’ve never bought gear based on what someone else is using.

I’ve always had an idea of what I want to be able to do, and have bought gear/software based on that.

Guys that i respect MASSIVELY for their techniques, though, are:

iLL Gates (was: The Phat Conductor)
James Zebiela
Shiftee
Jazzy Jeff
Krafty Kuts

Massive turning point for me was switching from Live to Traktor for mixing…

Mainly Hawtin, when he first got into the X1s. I’ve stuck with that setup ever since, but got some 1210s to spin on sometimes. I think Adam Beyer’s sets influence my style when I’m on TTs.

No one I’ve seen has influenced me to actually go out and buy things. I buy the things I buy (and I’ve bought a LOT over the last year) because I can do more things with it - things I’d like to be able to do at some point. I usually research the hell out of things before I make the decision to buy as well.

I have to say, this is the first midifighter product that looks interesting to me

Myself? I don’t want to sound conceited, but I had a pretty normal start.

I bought a MixTrack Pro I and found it wasn’t enough and got an LDP8 for effects. Then I got fed up with VDJ’s.. quirks and wanted to switch to Traktor. So I researched all kinds of gear as I knew what I wanted out of my new rig untill I found the right pieces. dSharps inspired me to get the MF Pro’s. The X1’s were a no brainer. Honestly, I cannot recall what drove me to the K2 as my mixer. The whole set-up tho has been a labour of love and research however.

I was initially inspired by Junior Vasquez back in the early 90’s - three turntables, Urei 1620, RLA style crossovers, etc. Twenty years later, I finally have most of the pieces that I used to covet (excluding a Sound Factory system… lol).

Mine was originally inspired by Junior Vasquez’ booth at Factory circa early 90’s. Three decks, Urei mixer, RLA crossover, Jamman looper, etc. Twenty+ years later, I have finally managed to acquire most of it. Now I just need that sound system!
