What happened to the days of putting the effort in?
conversation went on to be,
Me: so you want me to sit on my arse and mix the intro’s/outro’s?
him: Yeah that’ll be ideal, ill get you any club stuff i can for later.
(Already worked with this promoter before, lies constantly, dosent pay on time, yet he is popular with managers about here so he gets a lot of work. work is short for me atm and money is even shorter hence why im stooping.)
I’m on his side, there is nothing worse than a dj with adhd who wants to destroy good music for their own enjoyment at the expense of everyone else, If you want to be busy mixing more than two tracks play loop based percussive stuff like techno, dnb, breaks, there is plenty of room for extra noise, but anything with a melody should be left alone…
My style is nothing like that, prog house stuff with commercial acapella overlays, he knows my mixing is perfectly fine, just he seems to prefer boring a-b stuff.
subjective = maybe you over do it. ive never heard a mix of yours so i cant say but i know i certainly cant say i have never heard a dj over do it on the fx and over do on what they thought were technically proficient tricks but sounded like ass. maybe thats his polite way of telling you “tone down”. obviously he respects your abilities to some degree otherwise he wouldnt be trying to profit off you but it sounds like he trying to tell you what he feels is fact - your style isnt necessarily doing it for the crowds he promotes.
again - dont know never listened to a mix of yours but that can be one way of looking at this situation
There’s something to be said for that though. Although I love the idea of pushing technology to the limits… the sets I really enjoy the most when I go out and see stuff, is the simple shit.
Honestly.
A-B mixing done well. Now and again people getting a little fancy is well and good, but straight up honest, a lot of people get too fancy, too often, and it’s not enjoyable.
Now this just gets into the semantics of what people like to go out and see and listen to. And I don’t really want to fight that battle, but it’s what it comes down to.
And it also comes down to personal skill. If people are doing crazy shit, and it’s still completely danceable, that’s one thing. But I’m sure promoters on the whole really have to watch out for that kind of shit, and err on the side of caution when it comes down to it.
Not to nitpick, but I believe the equation you’re looking for is “x(airhorn) = airhorn + airhorn + […]” because "airhorn^x = airhorn * airhorn * […] = Go!+Activate! [from Frooty Loops.]
