Your gear is fine. You have a problem with static electricity/grounding. To confirm, touch some metal with one hand and with the other touch the platter.
Thanks very much for the input. I just attempted what you described and it seemed to remedy the problem–but how do I get rid of the static electricity/grounding problem completely???
