windows 7

windows 7

So what’s the deal with Windows 7? Is it worth looking at or should I stick with xp?

I just switched from Xp to 7. It’s a lot more responsive and makes a lot more sense, in terms of tasks.

I did a clean install so I also free’d up a lot of crap I didn’t need which also helped, but all in all, I like 7 and will be sticking to it.

Xp is good but 7 is just awesome. Also bear in mind that updates for xp like direct x etc are being phased out.

7 all the way!

Make sure none of your hardware has issues but you should be fine.

7 is great for anything but dj’ing.

i know im going to catch heat for that but if you look thru the forums this year i started with a sony i7 laptop with 4 gigs of ram.

serato and traktor had me switching to a macbook pro in nothing flat. using them side by side windows vs osx and theres simply just no contest.

mac’s run dj software better

i won’t flame you but in windows 7’s defence i will comment - you were using a sony…

It should also be mentioned, 32bit FTW.

i dont believe it was a windows vs osx related argument…

that said, if i was going to splurge on a music production/performance ONLY rig - i’d buy a mac, and i’ve never even used a mac for more than web browsing at mates places

I can’t speak for a switch from OSX to Windows7, I’m sure you’d rather not.

But from Vista and XP Traktor runs magnificently better on a clean install. It’s a lot leaner than Vista and is exactly what we should have had back in 2007 instead of the shitstorm of driver issues and idle resource hogging.

Thumbs up on Windows7 for me. Running the latest Traktor Scratch with negligible latency, two decks and sporadic effects on a well-cared for lappy toppy and a dedicated user account, of course.

HAs anyone come up with a work around for the probelm of having no hardware profiles.

I really cant be arsed having to disable things when i want to use traktor everytime.

absolutely amazing… and just like that he has solved the issue for everyone.

Wow even a totally non Mac related thread you guys bring out the old arguments lol.
@ Moley, as mentioned, go for win 7 mate. it really is a step up from XP.
/thread

7 is the way to go, if you’re not going with Mac. As for working around the lack of hardware profiles; if you have a decent system, then there’s no need to go shutting everything down like that. I just disable my wi-fi be for i start playing and that’s it. To be honest, i forget to do that sometimes, and i’ve never had an issue.
Well really there are 2 issues: it can be a pain to install Midi Yoke(you have to disable UAC and whatnot) and the other is a problem on all windows machine’s. The damn Send Monitor State glitch, but i’ve came up with a fix for this that will be out of beta and ready for the public really soon.

If you want to disable stuff, download Gamebooster and stick it in the startup folder for your DJ profile.

+1001 gamebooster. Its magic

Win 7 over XP. But, even if you can’t afford a LEGIT MAC, run OS X… imo. I’m a total Apple nerd, Jobs can STFU tho… xD

Just disable UAC and turn off your wifi, like everyone else is suggesting  I’d also go with 32 bit (drivers for hardware are a BITCH in 64)

Not sure why everyone is giving Windows 7 the thumbs up tbh. There are a few notable improvements but it’s still quite a bloated OS for a laptop that should be lean and minimal. I personally still run TinyXP with classic theme and everything disabled except my soundcard! It’s probably because my laptop only has 1gb of ram and so Win7 would run like an absolute dog otherwise (you definitely need 2gb of ram or more for Win7 imo).

Another thing I don’t like is how ugly Win7 is. You can probably tell that I like a basic looking OS (classic style ftw). Windows 7 is a truly hideous operating system though - Aero transparency makes the whole OS look like it was designed by someone who’s had 2 hours of Photoshop training and has just discovered the Gaussian Blur filter. Even if you switch the transparency off, there’s still FAR too much wasted space. Win7 also has an inferior Explorer shell… you can’t install ‘FolderSize’ for example. Gah!!

(I do use Win7 for my main pc btw)

All of that to say that you still use Windows.:smiley::smiley:

As far as the windows v. osx debate, My father (who, before he retired worked on the commercial antivirus program from CA) claims that the reason that windows has far more problems with security is because there are infinitely more people trying to break it compared to osx.

That is entirely true…

As far as a Mac working better than a PC to run DJ software, maybe out of the box it does, but I’ve never seen anything that suggest that for some reason that a Mac executes code in any way that is terribly different from a Windows machine. They have the same processors in them now (Intel for the most part), similar levels of cache, similar RAM capacity, and similar hard drives specs.

Use what ever hardware you feel comfortable with, but to say “Mac is better” is subjective and completely unproven. I’ve been a PC owner and a Mac owner since the late 90’s and my job is in the field, so maybe it’s just that I know what I’m doing, but running them side by side it’s always been just preference once you set them up.

Back on topic, i just installed Traktor Pro on a Windows 7 laptop, the OS install is very fresh and is OEM, so no manufacturer software to turn off, and it’s running amazingly well and the laptop is far from brand new.
