Windows 8

Windows 8

So with the release of the developers toolkit today was just wondering who else on here had installed it and had the opportunity to play around with it ? Currently waiting for mine to finish installing

I think it’s a nice OS…

… for a tablet.

yeah ive just installed it on the netbook its like a more clunky version of ubuntu unity. cant see this taking off except maybe for media serving?

I am really impressed with the technical achievments in windows 8 and how easy app development is for it. Also adding an app store is a good idea. Every1 saw it coming tho. Big differnce is developers can choose there own licencing agreement.

The security has been tightened up alot and the OS is less system intensive than 7.

All in all its a good step forward. Is it as good as OSX.

Yes and No. There is no doubt microsoft could make an OS as smooth and stable as OSX the difficulty comes in things like supporting old stuff. Business’s need that!

So its better that it supports more hardware and runs more apps. Its more secure (not safer than OSX)

My question is, is will the mainstream like it

i have downloaded the iso, my only question is can i install windows 8 onto an external hdd and run the os from there via usb? does anyone know, as i dont really want to install even as an extra partition on my primary C:

thanks in advance

We could see the majority of windows DJs eventually switching over to a tablet instead of a laptop with Windows 8.

I know you can currently use a ipad and some android tablets to play with some DJ apps and fx controllers, but we’ll soon be able to use the full versions of DJ software on Windows 8 tablets. Right now you can do it on a few windows 7 tablets, but the price/performance isn’t quite there yet to make it viable for most people(asus ep121 is close). By the time 8 goes live we’ll likely see a new level of Windows tablet price/performance which could be enough to get windows DJs switching over from their laptops.

Will the ipad 3 be able to run OSX in order to compete and give Apple users a complete tablet DJ experience as well? Be interesting to see if they do, or if Apple releases a new tablet running OSX and leaves the ipad 3 on iOS.

the samsung development tablet they gave away at the windows 8 launch is a quad core 15 with 4 gigs of ram. so pretty tasty machine

i second the question about using a external HD

only, i would like to know how bad of an idea it would be with a USB

Only some biasis or however u spell it support it, like how only some support virtualization of ports and stuff.

Ohh and I’m getting mine tomoro, but it looks like a windows phone software for a laptop or tower

Here is a good review of Win8 on a laptop Magazines Direct | PC Pro Magazine Subscription

I am 99% you can install it on a USB drive. That has been an option since XP. I was going to do an install of it last night but I was too lazy to hunt for a blank DVD and the preview didn’t like kicking off the upgrade from Win7. I’ll give it a go soon enough.

Theory: you only have 23kb of free space anyway

yaman. thats why im not on the IMTC drop box yet lol

This.

I think we’re going to see a massive change in the design of laptops in the future. Why would you want a ‘normal’ formfactor laptop when you could get something like this:

The above design solves the cost problem of owning an iPad/tablet and a laptop. Why pay for both when you can get an all in one design that serves both functions and runs Windows 8.

DJ’s and live performers are going to love Windows 8. I can forsee club owners fitting telescopic/flexible arm mounts so that dj’s can mount their Windows 8 tablets to the dj booth and use them for Serato/Traktor.

Whatever you think about Windows, you have to admit that Apple are really going to have to step their game up once we see cheap Windows 8 tablets coming out. If Windows 8 runs well enough on an Atom / AMD fusion processor, then there’s no reason why we won’t see Windows 8 tablets selling cheaper than an iPad. And that’s not even mentioning the ARM-compatibility (will lower costs further). Imagine being able to run an ARM-compatible version of Traktor or Ableton on a tablet with a battery life of over 10 hours! Sure, the iPad can run for 10 hours, but the difference between iOS and Windows applications is like night and day.

Why on earth would anyone buy an oversized iPhone (aka iPad), given that choice?

Another thing - I think that tablet manufactures will be looking at ways to implement an ARM chipset into Intel/AMD motherboards so that they can retain compatibility. Obviously, x86 apps won’t run on ARM cpu’s so until the apps get re-written for ARM, why not provide both types of cpu in one form factor? (if its technically feasible)

I think from the demo hardware we are mainly going to see i3 and i5’s in future windows 8 tablets. Good to see there also working on quality touch screen technology

Anyone tested the beta with Traktor yet?

looking forward to it
