Windows CPU question.. upgrade windows or upgrade the laptop?

Hello,
Long time lurker first time poster.

Currently running an S4 on vista. Laptop is a gateway P 7805u.

Intel Centrino 2 2.26GHz processor.
4GB RAM.
17" WXGA high-definition widescreen.
VIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS.

I’ve done about all I can optimization wise, its pretty barebone. All drivers are up to date. I still get crackles and dropouts around a few times per hour. Granted, its doable for house parties and small groups when no one really cares, but I can’t go any farther with this setup. This is a dedicated djing laptop.

So to my question, will upgrading to windows 7 provide me with the system stability that I need. Or is this computer just too slow to handle the S4. I don’t want to waste the 100-150$ on Windows 7 just to find out I need to upgrade laptops anyways.

If not, any suggestions on a windows based laptop preferably less then $1000 that would give me the best bang for my buck as a dj only machine?

Have you had a play with the Nvidia’s gfx settings? If there is an option for “performance” (faster gfx, less detail) or “quality” (slower gfx, more detail) pick performance. If that’s not an option, see what else you can do to minimize how much the GFX chip is utilized.

I’ve never been a big fan of vista. But first, What are your latency settings like?

My dedicated DJ rig is actually slower than yours, has a higher resolution screen, and it doesn’t miss a beat.

Dropped the Nvidia settings to performance over quality… running at 1440 x 900. I can crackle it at 44100hz @ 4 ms x 256 (13.4ms total) just by rapidly browsing my collections.

i;d seriously consider creating a 2nd partition and dual booting with windows 7.

otherwise yeah disable any graphics optimization. follow the windows optimization tips on NI’s website

this is for windows 7 but much will be the same…

Installing as we speak, will let you know how it turns out.

Installed windows 7. Took alot of tweaking, but its been running for about an hour with nothing over 532us latency. Running at 7.5 ms total now.

I had to disable my battery in device manager. I also had to disable wifi. The final issue was the nvidia graphics drivers were older then I thought. This was the final issue to overcome. I think this might have been the main cuplrit all along. I was taking at face value that the drivers on the gateway website were the most up to date. Not the case.

Thanks for the help guys.

anything below 600us should be fine. mine stays below this even with firefox running and wifi on

from what i’ve read on here the graphics and power management are probably the worst culprits. also making sure traktor is up to date

If you do decide to buy a new laptop that is proven to work with the S4 without issues, check out this website.

http://www.TraktorLaptops.com

Certified Traktor Ready Laptops with video showing them running the software and hardware.

In my experience, XP Pro seems to work much better with the S4 when compared to Win7. I have both. XP Pro always provides lower latency reading for some reason.

I would love to know how they can use the word “certified”. Who is doing the certification? NI?

Native Instruments is not doing the certification. They are testing their laptops with their own Traktor equipment and ensuring it works with the S2/S4.

Yeah, that’s not certification.

In your opinion, what constitutes certification? If I own a laptop that I have used with my Traktor S4 for months with no problems, couldn’t I “certify” that my laptop works with out issue with the S4?
